BREAKING: Hutchinson CC DT Jerrell Boykins commits to Baylor (STORY POSTED)

With the nose tackle situation in the middle of its defense changing for 2023, Baylor needed immediate help.

It got it in Hutchinson (KS) Community College defensive tackle Jerrell Boykins who announced on social media Monday that he was committing to the Bears. Boykins took an official visit to Baylor over the weekend.
Login to view embedded media Boykins will have three years to play three seasons. He secured 13 offers including P5 offers from Nebraska, Colorado and Washington State along with potential American Athletic Conference Champion Tulane. Boykins was rated a 3-star with a 5.6 when he was in the 2021 class.

“Coach [Dennis] Johnson said he loved my film,’’ Boykins said. “And yes they are losing [Apu Ika] who’s going to the NFL draft so they wanted to bring in someone to fill that role. He really likes my power and explosiveness.
"The coaches assured me on the visit that they would develop me as a player.''
Login to view embedded media Baylor will need someone in the middle to set the tone for the 3-3-5. Defensive productivity numbers aren’t necessarily a factor for nose tackled. But a good one can clog the A gaps and then funnel things properly. Boykins has seven solo tackles and 11 assisted tackles this season.

“I’ve heard the atmosphere is great there,’’ Boykins said. “I would say my style of play is very disruptive and dominant.”

Bowl preparations

Either Aranda has been totally preparing the team for the bowl game to the detriment of recruiting or he has been unsuccessfully been putting out recruiting fires and has not prepared the team. Air Force will be prepared

I honestly don’t think you can play Shapen. If he tears an ACL in a meaningless bowl game, where are we in the Fall?

Transfer portal quarterbacks

We needed to bring in a transfer quarterback even before today's developments. Now we probably need at least two. Who of this list excites you or appears to be a viable candidate based on the system we run? Push the "load athletes" button to call up more potential candidates.

BREAKING: Baylor lands Arkansas WR Ketron Jackson

By Kevin Lonnquist
Publisher

Baylor needed a physical presence with its receiving corps. It's hoping that former Arkansas and Royse City wide receiver Ketron Jackson will be that answer.

After entering the NCAA transfer portal earlier this month, Jackson committed to Dave Aranda's program. He made the announcement on Twitter on Tuesday.

He should have three years to play two. In 2021, Jackson appeared in all 13 games with five receptions for 97 yards.
Jackson's role expanded in 2022 with 16 receptions for 277 yards averaging 17.3 yards per catch and three scores.

The 6-2, 203-pound Jackson was No. 193 in the Rivals250 for 2021 out of Royse City. SMU was also making a serious push for Jackson.

Ketron JACKSON , WR

KETRON JACKSON, JR. A ROYSE CITY, TX ELITE RECEIVER IS THE MYSTERY RECEIVER. The WORD is out..... Baylor offered early, as in his Sr year, but Ketron hesitated too long and was told by the Bears, they were complete with receivers, so, his alternative was the Razorbacks. As I was told by a RELIABLE source, he always remembered how
the Bears treated him as he hesitated too long. Seeing him play starting as a SO.,I recommended (to Blanchard at that time) him and and another player.
As you can see his offers, there were many and Great schools. Hopefully, the Bears can get him committed and signed this time around.....He's a WINNER
AND MAY IT BE AT BAYLOR....
Sic 'em Bears, fans, Royse City Football, always be the Best you can be......i will reserve a seat for Ketron in his future Hall of Fame entry at Royse City......

The Other Sideline: Air Force

By Kevin Lonnquist
Publisher

Baylor wraps up the 2022 season with its inaugural appearance in the Armed Forces Bowl Thursday at TCU’s Amon Carter Stadium (6:30 p.m., ESPN).

The Bears face the United States Air Force Academy out of the Mountain West Conference. This is AFA’s sixth appearance in the game.

Riding a 4-game winning streak, the Falcons have been one of the hotter teams in the country.

Air Force is 30-8 the last three full seasons, excluding the COVID-shortened 2020 season. Air Force is 9-3 this season, finished 10-3 last season and 11-2 in 2019. The Falcons have won three straight and four out of their last five bowl appearances. They also possess the 2022 Commander in Chief’s Trophy after beating both Navy and Army.

Air Force is the only academy team playing in the college football bowl season.

A look at the Falcons.

Opponent: Air Force Falcons
Head Coach: Troy Calhoun (120-78, 16th season)
2022 Record: 9-3, 5-3
Record vs. Baylor: Baylor leads, 3-0
Key Players: QB Haaziq Daniels, FB Brad Roberts, RB, John Lee Eldridge III, SS Camby Goff, LB TD Blackmon, LB Vince Sanford
Common Denominator: This is the first bowl meeting between the two programs
Offensive Formation: Triple option
Defensive Formation: 3-3-5

Aout Air Force on Offense:
The secret sauce to any option attack is the trigger man. That’s Daniels. The nation’s leading rushing attack is averaging 330.9 yards per game and time of possession with an incredible 36:16 minutes per game. In 735 rushing attempts, the Falcons have lost only 197 yards. They do have 20 fumbles and lost 11 of them. Daniels’ (733 yards rushing, 614 passing) decision making has been key to that. Roberts (1,612 yards, 15 TD) has been the top rusher in the fullback dive. Eldridge (701, 7.9 ypc) is the pitch man with game-breaking ability. Of course, with any option, the Falcons don’t throw it much. AFA has attempted just 80 passes all season. Yet it’s done with big plays in mind. David Cormier (13-384) is that averaging 29.4 yard per reception.

About Air Force on Defense: This team can play a little defense. The 3-3-5 allows them to spread the field and cut off plays to the perimeter. But they also have enough speed to regroup and help in run support. Opponents are averaging just 13.3 points per game and 256 total yards per game. The yards are the fewest in the country. Only two opponents have scored 20 or more against the Falcons, Utah State and Nevada. Blackmon and free safety Trey Taylor are the leading tacklers at 67 and 66 stops. Sanford has had a huge season with 9.5 TFLs and 5.5 sacks. Air Force has created 16 turnovers. Of course, the weakness is going to be the overall size because of the academy height and weight barriers. Across the 3-man front, they are 265, 265 and 250.

About Air Force on Special Teams: Carson Bay is the No. 1 punter but isn’t having a particular strong season averaging 38.8 yards per effort. Only two of his 29 efforts have carried 50 yards or better. PK Matthew Dapore is enjoying a solid season he hasn’t missed a PAT (34-34) Anthony Rodriguez converted all seven of his PATs. Dapore is also 15-20 on field goals. He’s 4-6 on 40-49 and 3-6 on 50+. Amari Terry is the No. 1 punt and kick returner but really hasn’t done anything significant. Air Force has not allowed a punt or kickoff returned for a score.

Bottom Line: The drill facing this team is to play assignment football against the option and making sure everybody understands their jobs. Who has the dive? Who has the pitch? Who has the QB? Air Force wants to choke the life out of the game. It’s played six of its 12 games in three hours or less. Option teams are not good come-from-behind teams. Getting a three-score lead would be ideal. But through the regular season, the Falcons have not been in that position. They lost their three games by a total of 15 points.

MBB - No. 11 Baylor 65, Washington State 59; Bears 8-2 (ANALYSIS/NOTES/QUOTES)

Bears were a little sluggish to start as you would expect since they had not played in 12 days.

While Washington State controlled the pace throughout, Baylor was able to get the offense going.

Keyonte George took 11 of his 14 shots from deep (made three) but made a big one down the stretch that helped give this team some breathing room. He finished with a game-high 19. George is even a better passer with three assists. He should have had five had it not been for fumbles under the basket.

Adam Flagler was sluggish for most of this one but came alive with six of his 12 in the closing moments including two nice driving layups off the window to help.

Baylor's largest lead was only eight. Bears defense did a great job in the closing three minutes really frustrating the Cougars.

The deciding possession was with about 2:50 to play and Baylor leading 59-55. Cougars got a fast break off a George turnover (he slipped at the top of the arc). Justin Powell missed a rushed 3-pointer. Muhamed Gueye got the rebound but got to anxious and missed and then turned it over. That was pretty much it. They then took way too much time on a possession because Baylor didn't give them any looks.

Washington State came into this game shooting 38 percent from the arc. Cougars put up 29 of their 52 shots from the arc and made only 10. At 35 percent, the Bears held them a little below their average.

Quiet day for LJ Cryer with six. Bears shot 45 percent but were bad from the arc (6-24).

That's the last decent non-conference push Baylor sees. Bears are back in the Ferrell Center at 7:00 pm Tuesday against Northwestern State (ESPN+).

Postgame Notes

  • Baylor improves to 2-2 against Washington State Under Scott Drew.
  • 65 points are the fewest points scored in a BU win since they beat Oklahoma 65-51 on 1/22/22.
  • BU is 42-10 in road/neutral venues over the last four seasons.
  • The Bears are 11-1 against their last 12 Pac 12 opponents, with wins in each of the last 7 meetings.
  • Baylor is 44-5 vs. unranked teams over the last three seasons.
  • Baylor improves to 8-1 this season when holding a halftime lead.
  • The Bears have won nine of the last 12 games in NBA arenas including each of the last three at the AAC.
  • Keyonte George led Baylor in scoring for a third-straight game.
  • George is averaging 19.7 points per game in the last three games.
  • George has scored in double figures in 5-straight games.
  • With 12 points, Adam Flagler scored in double figures for an 11th-straight game.
  • It was Flagler’s 80th career double-figure scoring effort (10 this season, 48 at Baylor)
  • Flagler was a season-best .714 (5-of-7) from the floor.
  • Flo Thamba scored a season-high eight points
Notable Scott Drew Postgame

It’s a very good offensive team and hopefully we can keep improving there because (on) offense we're not gonna shoot 6 for 24 from three. (A) couple of them were contested and too early but we're not gonna shoot that bad. We get good shots. We got good shooters, they're going to shoot 40%.

(In terms of Josh, when Flo got that 4th foul, where is your trust in Josh?)
Well I think all the players really are trusting ‘Ke and Josh defensively a lot more and now that they're starting to really understand the defense, where to be, what to do. And Josh really gave us a great lift with that and I thought Caleb did, too. So, I mean, that was really big.

(They had pretty good length, is that a little different than other teams you’ve played?)
Yeah, (they’re) one of the more athletic, longer, bigger teams. They've been banged up. They haven't had No. 3, Jabe Mullins, in a couple games and you can see what a difference he makes; 3 for 8 from three, 5 for 11 (from the floor), 16 points. You take that 16 out and that really gave them a lift. So, they're a team that has a lot of shooters. They have a lot of length. They do a great job on the glass. They outrebounded us 13 to nine on the offensive board and that's something that we're not used to.

Baylor offers 2023 LB Justin Horne; ULL Commit

This is how recruiting goes. You canvas the countryside to see what's out there.

Expected to take an OV on Monday, 12/19. Yeah I know it's all weird because of the bowl game on Thursday 12/22. But it's really no different from doing OV's during the regular season. Bears are just going 90 miles north to Fort Worth.

Random thoughts on the NIL

It may have been Fred Akers that said, "There's always an uncle." What he meant was that in the good old days before NIL, <sarcasm tag>when players played for the love of the sport and not because they were getting paid</sarcasm tag> that when schools recruited players, there was always some guy with a dubious connection to the player who wanted to negotiate on the player's behalf. This guy was almost always called an "uncle."
They were shady guys who were looking for a percentage of the under the table money. Welcome to NIL, where you don't have to do it under the table.
There are rumors out there now that some of the NIL companies aren't making payments to the players on time, or sometimes, at all.
For every Arch Manning, who has a family that has a fleet of lawyers to nail down a solid deal and understands all the weasel wording in sports contracts, there are hundreds of kids who end up with an "uncle."
Jake Dickert, the Washington State head coach, said people were contacting his active players and their parents and offering NIL deals.
How many of these people are wannabe "uncles" trying to pick up a percentage of an NIL deal? There's no way to know.
Some of the NIL deals are being offered by boosters setting up shell corporations for recruiting. What happens if they just quit paying? Will the now eighteen year old have a lawyer on retainer to enforce the contract? How will they file a lawsuit when the corporation headquarters is a PO Box, vacant lot, or a boarded up store in a strip mall?
Pro athletes like Muhammad Ali, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Bernie Kosar, Michael Jordan, and countless others ended up losing fortunes. Sometimes it was reckless spending. Sometimes it was child support, sometimes it was alimony, and sometimes it was their business managers screwing them over.
High school kids are brain damaged. When I was seventeen, I was brain damaged. So were you. Think about the decisions you made at seventeen. Now, consider how many of these kids have nobody in their lives that can negotiate a contract, and no idea how to find someone that can negotiate a contract and has their best interests at heart.
A lot of these kids have been protected from real life consequences of stupid actions because they're good athletes. As irresponsible as I was at 17, I can only imagine what I would have been like if I'd been getting the special treatment a lot of them get.
So, how many of these NIL companies are shell outfits, run by fly by night guys? What recourse will the players have if they don't receive the payments?
The NIL money is the only money most of the athletes will ever get from playing football.
There are approximately 16,000 FBS players, and 8,500 P5 players at any given time. That doesn't include DII or III players. There are less than 1,500 NFL players. Less than 1% of BCS players will be in the NFL, and less than 2% of P5 players.
A lot of these players are about to get a life lesson in hardball.

IT'S TIME TO GO

Just some random thoughts about one of the EXITING teams to the sec, the lower 40, that couldn't win in the BIG 12. With all their $$, the lower 40 took to the NIL $$
like Ducks to Water, noting this just elevated what they were doing all along----FACT---as I know and have been told by teammates and others who played at 'that' place down South.
With all the 'conniving' going on there, then we get a Domestic Violence debacle with Coach Beard. ( and don't forget the Monkey on an Assassin Pole---yep...LOL.) Sad, but it happened. and this late in the process, Beard probably won't go at this point in time.......he'll stay with Caveat's of course......And so it continues to evolve 'down South', over and over again. They will never, ever, stop at the Lower 40, it's just an inherited 'gene' there, Coach Teaff said when Arkansas left for the sec, "Don't let the Door hit you in the back end" and away you go, and carry your nuances with you. And be quick about it as Georgia, Alabama, LSU, MS, MS State and others anxiously await.......yes, indeed.....
Sic 'em Bears, be the Best and win 'em all......

Some names I’m hearing to fill open staff positions

What’s up, everybody!

Here are some names I’ve heard from multiple sources in regards to who Baylor will target to fill its open spots on staff:

Jim Leonhard - Wisconsin DC, interim head coach in 2022

Bill Busch (keep a close eye on this one) - Nebraska special teams coordinator, interim DC in 2022

Matt Powledge - Oregon co-DC in 2022
