When actress Drew Barrymore gave the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction speech for this all-female band in 2021, the enthusiasm was like she was a little girl again. She couldn’t contain her excitement.

The Go-Go’s were the first all-female band to have a Number One album in the Billboard 200 when Beauty and the Beat climbed to the top spot in 1982. The quintet — Belinda Carlisle, Charlotte Caffey, Gina Schock, Kathy Valentine, and Jane Wiedlin — also performed during the ceremony.
“When I was about seven I discovered the Go-Go’s. I went out and bought their album
Beauty and the Beat, and as the vinyl twirled, my whole world changed,” Barrymore said in an essay called “House Party.” “I stared at the girls on the cover like they were a gateway to cool. The fact that they were girls made me feel not only invited but more important — like I could be a badass too. I looked over to my Pippi Longstocking poster on the wall and thought, Yes, I like girls who rock!”

They were trend setters. They broke the mold. Few thought they could reach this kind of pinnacle. But they did. For these five, they changed the course of the industry to where female groups looked up to them for inspiration knowing that if these ladies could do it so could they.

There is no further introduction for the Go-Go’s for this week’s entry. But let’s provide the RJB’s personal favorites. BTW, their drummer Gina Schock is really good. Very under rated.

All seemed right in the world on Saturday evening, didn’t it? Even though you knew the day Baylor vs. Albany was scheduled that Baylor would win by a bunch, that became the secondary.

The theme of the day is that the long wait was over. Baylor was back in the business of playing football on a Saturday. The feelings are indescribable.

It was just fun to turn on the TV at 9:00 a.m. and have College Game Day on in the background to do whatever it was that you were doing. Then there was the fun of watching games throughout the day.

Some personal items of note from your publisher on this official opening weekend of the 2022 College Football season:

>I felt sick for East Carolina against No. 13 NC State. Not only did the Pirates miss the game-tying extra point because the holder messed up the snap, they then missed a chance to win the game when their PK pushed the game-winning 41-yard FG to the right. The Wolfpack won, 21-20.

>I felt just as bad for Appalachian State against North Carolina. The Mountaineers had two two-point conversion attempts that would have won (the first one would have) or tie the game and missed them both. It went for naught as Appalachian State scored 40 points in the fourth quarter just to get the game to the deciding moments. North Carolina won, 63-61.

>Utah-Florida was probably the best game of the day. Florida’s defense came up with an INT in the end zone in the closing seconds to beat the No. 7 Utes. I had it on next to me in the press box. Seemed like a great game.

>Arkansas-Cincinnati was also a really solid game between two Top 25 teams. I have two people in my household who gave the thumbs up to it.

>Then there was the ecstasy and agony at the end of LSU-Florida State. LSU recovers a fumble at its one – after it muffed a punt – and drives 99 yards in the last 1:25 to apparently tie the game on the final play of regulation only to have the PAT blocked. Florida State wins, 24-23.

>Alabama and Georgia look scary good. But let’s let the season unfold a little more.

>I appreciate the fact we had such opening day matchups as Utah-Florida, Oregon-Utah, Cincinnati-Arkansas and Ohio State-Notre Dame. We know this weekend is usually reserved for the powers to play openers with ho hum opponents to work out the kinks – nothing wrong with that – but for programs with playoff aspirations, they were willing to risk it on the opening week. Besides, even if you get beat and circle the wagons to come back, you still might in position for the playoffs when the first polls are released in late October. Pssst…not many teams finish the season undefeated.

>Nothing really surprised me about the Big 12’s opening weekend. I’m not going to kneejerk too much over Oklahoma State allowing Central Michigan scoring 44 points when it was 51-15 at one point and Mike Gundy took his foot off the gas. West Virginia flat out gave away its game at Pittsburgh. But the good news is that the Backyard Brawl is back. That’s a really good rivalry game and I’m glad both teams have decided to renew it.

>It was just fun to turn the dial back and forth to games around the country to see what was going on. College football is a really good game. I just hope the powers that be just don’t find a way to let money to become too much of an influence that it lessens the pageantry.

Quick story. My Crimson Tide and I had talked over the summer about her flying from Birmingham to Austin for Alabama vs. Texas. She said that logistics were too problematic with her schedule and that she couldn’t do it.

Then Dad got a call in the middle of last week because the game is this coming Saturday.

Crimson Tide: Dad, do you love your daughter?

Dad: Yes, what’s going on?

Crimson Tide: Do you want to buy my plane ticket to Austin for Friday.

Dad: No

Crimson Tide: Well, a lot of friends are going to be flying from Nashville and the tickets are cheaper there than in Birmingham.

Dad: No

Crimson Tide: OK, love you.

Dad: Love you, too

For those of us who have been through the kids in college era, we know the drill. They downplay everything until the you know what hits the fan. Then, they want to really be there as the day gets closer. Heck, we were their age, and we did the same thing.

Now, we have to be the bad guy and say no. I wouldn’t have had a problem with doing it had she asked well in advance and been committed to it. But given today’s inflation climate, there’s no way that was happening. Go to a restaurant with friends, find a big screen and scream your tails until you can’t talk anymore.

Besides, she went to College Station last year when Alabama played at Texas A&M.

Now, a look at other Baylor sports…

>Football scheduling note: Baylor is scheduled to play at Air Force in 2027. There is no word of a return game.

>Baylor soccer shutout Houston, 3-0, Thursday night at Carl Lewis International Complex. Playing against Iowa late Sunday – the game was delayed by thunderstorms – the Lady Bears and Lady Hawks played to a scoreless draw. Baylor is 2-2-2.

>The No. 9-ranked Baylor volleyball team defeated UC Santa Barbara, 3-0, on Saturday morning in Firestone Fieldhouse to close the Pepperdine Asics Classic.

The Bears (3-2) blanked the Gauchos (0-5) in three sets: 25-22, 25-20, 25-13. That followed after the Lady Bears beat San Diego State on Saturday after losing to Pepperdine on Thursday.

Baylor (3-2) plays host to Colorado State on Thursday (6:00 p.m) followed by Arizona State on Saturday (11:30 a.m.).

>Baylor cross country posted identical second-place finishes at the season-opening meet Thursday morning at the Tornado Watch Invitational in Round Rock.

Let’s make it a great week.
