This is the direction Baylor is going as its starting QB for the 2022 season in Blake Shapen. While I'm looking into this more, more signals are showing this to be the case. No official comment has come from Baylor.
This was a tight battle for the starting position between the sophomore out of Shreveport, LA and Super Senior Gerry Bohanon from Earle, AR. However, head coach Dave Aranda said at the start of spring football and through Saturday's Green & Gold game that he planned on naming a starter in the exit meetings this week.
Bohanon was named the starter for the 2021 season shortly before the opener as he won the job over Jacob Zeno. He guided the Bears through the first 10 1/2 games going 8-2 before injuring his right hamstring at Kansas State.
Shapen came on in relief and finished that win at Kansas State then directed Baylor to a berth in the Big 12 championship game with a victory over Texas Tech.
He then helped Baylor defeat Oklahoma State to the Big 12 title game in a 21-16 win over Oklahoma State. In the game, he set a conference title game and AT&T Stadium record by completing his first 17 attempts. However, Shapen suffered a shoulder injury in the game and was unavailable for the Sugar Bowl. Bohanon started.
In 2021, Bohanon threw for 2,200 yards with 18 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He completed just shy of 63 percent of his passes. Shapen completed 73 percent of his passes for 596 yards with five touchdowns and no interceptions.
Following this decision, it's unclear what Bohanon's next move will be. He could remain the backup or enter the NCAA transfer portal. Any decision on the front has to be made by this Sunday, May 1. One-time transfers have to decide by then in order to be eligible to play in 2022.
Should that happen, time will tell what will happen with walk-on CJ Rogers and Kyron Drones. Drones is on scholarship. Baylor could place Rogers on scholarship or search the portal for an experienced backup quarterback behind Shapen.![BlakeShapen2022IG.jpg BlakeShapen2022IG.jpg](https://rivals-cdn.s3.amazonaws.com/forums/baylor/data/attachments/0/41-cde7928705bb275403b9829610f88b26.jpg)
