SicEmSports continues its look at Baylor’s 2022 opponents. Game 6 represents the midway point of the 2022 campaign. Following a byE on Oct. 8, the Bears travel to Morgantown, WV for a Thursday night game at West Virginia on Oct. 13 (FS1).
Since joining the Big 12, Baylor has never won in Milan Puskar Stadium. The Bears are 0-5. However, there is the sense that this is the team that can finally end the frustration.
Opponent: West Virginia
Head Coach: Neal Brown (17-18, 4th season; 52-34 8th overall)
2021 Record: 6-7, 4-5 (lost to Minnesota, 18-6, in Guarantee Rate Bowl)
Conference Affiliation: Big 12
Record vs. Baylor: West Virginia leads, 6-4
Returning Starters: 7 offense, 4 defense
Offensive Formation: One-back
Defensive Formation: 4-2-5
Key Returners: WR Bryce Ford-Wheaton, OL Zach Frazier, DL Dante Stills, DB Charles Woods
This could be the season that defines Brown’s tenure in Morgantown. The first three seasons have just been average with teams that have not been true contenders.
To try and change course, Brown hired Graham Harrell, formerly of USC, as the new offensive coordinator. Brown is also bringing in Georgia portal QB transfer J.T. Daniels who never really got the chance to do anything for the Bulldogs during their national championship run last year.
Something has to be better as the Mountaineers were very spotty with their offense in 2021 averaging 370 yards per game and suffering from far too many inconsistencies.
The defense will experience major turnover especially with the secondary and linebackers. Brown dipped into the JUCOs for help in the second line. Stills, a preseason All-Big 12 selection on the 2022 media team, is a presence up front but he can’t do it alone.
WVU’s success will depend on if the downfield passing game with Daniels can click with his receivers and if a running game can be developed.
The Mountaineers are predicted 8th in the preseason poll for 2022. Not much is expected of them except that they are a candidate to win six games and probably go to a minor bowl. Should that happen, that may not be enough for Brown to return for a fifth season in 2023.
