SicEmSports continues its look at Baylor’s 2022 opponents. Game 11 is the home finale and Senior Day against longtime rival TCU. Baylor-TCU is one of the oldest rivalries in all of college football.
Very odd circumstances in the 2021 meeting in which TCU won 30-28 at Amon Carter Stadium. A late interception thrown by Gerry Bohanon foiled Baylor’s comeback chances.
This was the game following the dismissal of then head coach Gary Patterson. TCU then went across DFW in late November and hired SMU head coach Sonny Dykes to take over the program.
Opponent: TCU
Head Coach: Sonny Dykes (first season at TCU, 71-63 12th season overall)
2021 Record: 5-7, 3-6
Conference Affiliation: Big 12
Record vs. Baylor: TCU leads, 57-53-7; TCU won, 30-28, in Fort Worth in 2021
Returning Starters: 14 total starters
Offensive Formation: One-back
Defensive Formation: 4-3
Key Returners: QB Max Duggan/Chandler Morris, WR Quentin Johnson, WR Derius Davis, DL Dylan Horton, NT Soni Misi, LB Dee Winters
It's going to be an interesting season in Fort Worth. You wouldn’t really call this a rebuild for Dykes.
But the coaching staff he took with him over from SMU is not intact. Running backs coach Ra’Shaad Samples moved up to the LA Rams. Defensive line coach Chidera Uzo-Diribe moved to Georgia.
However, Dykes picked up solid replacements between Anthony Jones (Memphis) to handle the backs while former OU standout and rising defensive assistant JaMarkus McFarland (La Tech) to take over the defensive front.
There are plenty of offensive options in the passing game with two playmakers in receivers Johnson and Davis. Now, the question really comes down to who is the No. 1 quarterback? It appears Morris is the man.
But that can change between him and Duggan. Of course, Duggan’s career at TCU has been star-crossed with great moments offset by frustrations and injuries.
Defensively, the Horned Frogs were one of the worst in the country in 2021, which is partially led to Patterson’s ouster, allowing 462 yards and 35 points per game.
That’s where its hoped new DC Joseph Gillespie can make an impact and turn things around.
Despite a turbulent season, TCU was still one win shy of becoming bowl eligible. The talent level is good enough for the Horned Frogs to return to the postseason.
