SicEmSports begins its look at Baylor’s 2022 opponents. The debut is with FCS Albany. This guarantee game became possible when Baylor canceled its series with Louisiana Tech. The Bears needed to add another home game and had to make other adjustments with the arrival of BYU, Cincinnati, Houston and UCF to the Big 12 in 2023.
The season opener is Sept. 3, Labor Day weekend.
Opponent: Albany
Head Coach: Greg Gattuso
2021 Record: 2-9, 1-7
Conference Affiliation: Colonial Athletic Association
Record vs. Baylor: First meeting
Returning Starters: 4 offense, 4 defense
Offensive Formation: One-back
Defensive Formation: 4-3
Key Returners: QB Joey Carino, WR Roy Alexander, WR Jackson Parker, LB Jackson Ambush, DL Joseph Greaney
After being silent for nearly 50 years (the program was dropped in 1924 as a club sport), the Great Danes actually began their football program in 1973 and had been playing in the Northeast Conference. They then moved to the Colonial Athletic Association in 2013. Albany shares that league with the likes of Villanova, James Madison and Stony Brook.
Gattuso is just the second coach in program history since it returned. Bob Ford guided Albany until he retired following the 2013 season. Gattuso is now entering his eighth season and is 29-35.
It appears the Great Danes will have a major makeover from the 2-9 2021 team that only scored 208 points. The top two receivers are back between Alexander and Parker. Combined, they accounted for a little more than 1,000 yards.
This is a program that has experienced some success. In 2019, it advanced to the FCS playoffs and went to the second round. It defeated Central Connecticut in the first round before falling to Montana State.
During the COVID-19 2020 season, Albany only played four games. The 2021 season was pretty much a nightmare. This program typically plays a D1 program each season. In recent seasons, it has faced Pittsburgh, Central Michigan and Syracuse.
While this is a new FCS opponent for Baylor to play, the Bears are not unfamiliar with playing teams from the state of New York. They played four games with Buffalo between 2007-2014 and won all of them. They have also played Army four times and are 3-1.
