None of the tight ends have made much of an impression, but a lot of that has to do with Baylor’s previous scheme. Route running will be more important this year.

Christoph Henle
#87, Senior, 6’6”, 255 lbs

Henle played at the Oakridge School in Arlington, and has played in every game since he’s been on campus, but hasn’t started much since his freshman year.

Tyler Henderson
#82, Junior, 6’4”, 253 lbs

Henderson is a three star out of Kyle, Texas. He redshirted his freshman year, played in all thirteen games in 2018, and sat out 2019 with a medical red shirt. So, even though he started five years ago, he’s still a junior, and could end up with seven seasons if he takes advantage of the COVID year.

Ben Sims
#86, Junior, 6’4”, 253 lbs

Sims is from Clark High School in San Antonio. Sims played in three games as a freshman, and eight games in 2019. He started six games in 2020, but both 2019 and 2020 were cut short for him by season ending injuries. In 2020, he had 14 receptions for 164 yards, and tied for the team lead with three touchdowns.

Drake Dabney
#83, Sophomore, 6’5”, 252 lbs

BU-SP-7D-0117.jpg

Dabney was out of Cy Ranch High School, and started two games of 2020 as a true freshman.

Ty Moore
#24, Redshirt Freshman, 6’3”, 215

Moore played wide receiver at Lorena High School. He’s played at both Southwest Mississippi Community College and played tight end at Northwestern State. He redshirted his freshman year. He’s the lightest tight end by thirty pounds, and his dad is the Baylor softball coach.

Summary
Dabney got a chance to audition for the starting job as a redshirt freshman, and did a good job. Henle didn’t get the starts when Sims went down for the last two games. Dabney, Sims, and Henle will all see playing time this year. It’s hard to set a pecking order for the tight ends, but my guess is Dabney, Sims, Henle, then Henderson.

Kickers.png

All the kicking spots seem solid. Each position has a main guy who can take care of business, and can also back up at one of the other kicking spots.

Gone: Jay Sedwick, Josh Grant

Issac Power
#43, Junior, 6’1”, 200 lbs

Power is a solid punter, and the only punter on the roster. In 2020, he averaged over 40 yards per punt, with a long of 66, eleven inside the twenty, and seven of fifty yards or more.

John Mayers
#95, Junior, 5’10”, 187 lbs

Solid kicker inside the 40, and can do double duty as a punter, if needed. He’s money on extra points.

Noah Rauschenberg
#99, Junior, 6’1”, 195 lbs

21SG-7D-0075.jpg

Kickoff specialist who can back up Mayers as a place kicker.

Bryce Boland
#96, Redshirt Freshman, 5’11”, 172

BUSpring2-0257.jpg

Boland’s out of Midway and his dad used to be the head tennis coach at Baylor. Redshirted in 2020. He was local with Baylor connections and averaged over 40 yards a punt in high school, and was 125 out of 125 on extra points.

With long snappers being protected by the rules, they have one job. Get the ball to the holder or punter. If they do that successfully, they’re good. Baylor’s long snappers are good, and have names that look like they should be in the Avengers.

Thor Rodoni
#47, Sixth Year, 6’2”, 222 lbs

Rodoni is a sixth year senior, and takes care of business.

Gunnar Royer
#40, Fifth Year, 6’2”, 220 lbs

Long snapper for punting team. Spent three years at the University of Pennsylvania before coming to Baylor.

Offensive summary
The offense will be better this year, but will still be below average. With nine returning starters last year, there was no excuse for the performance. This year, it will be better, but there are serious talent gaps on the offensive line and in the wide receiver corps. The quarterback situation needs to be sorted out. The good news is they only got blown out in one game last year, the Oklahoma State game, after everyone had emotionally checked out.
It’s a multi-year fix, but a sensible offensive scheme and the importation of a few transfers can increase the wins, maybe enough to be bowl eligible.
