In recruiting relationships are the essence of why recruits commit.

While Baylor and Houston St. Thomas 2021 wide receiver Cameron Bonner had built something in the spring only to see it simmer in the summer and early fall, things can change.

And they did. On Monday, Bonner announced on social media that he has verbally committed to the Bears. He chose Baylor over Utah and Arizona. His timing had a purpose. Bonner committed on his mother Na’Kea Artis-Bonner’s birthday.

Bonner is expected to sign with the Bears on Wednesday and arrive in June. He is the 17th member of the 2021. He also gives them that fourth wide receiver that the staff has been desiring since Hal Pressley (Auburn) and Roderick Daniels (SMU) de-committed earlier in the fall.

“The family environment, from talking with all the staff everyday feeling the love on every call. I loved that. “With the de-commitments of the two other receivers it opened again my chance to work and commit for that position.’’

With 4.41 laser time at the Adidas Rivals 2019 combine, Bonner brings the potential of a vertical threat, something the Baylor offense lacked during the 2020 season. He averaged 21.5 yards per reception for St. Thomas as that program went 7-3.

Bonner resumed his relationship with Baylor wide receivers coach Jorge Munoz in recent weeks. When Baylor offered him this past February, everything gained momentum.

Now that he’s in the fold, it’s a chance to develop even more.

“I like to show off my speed and I want to expand my elusiveness and other things,’’ Bonne said. “But it all comes down to what that depth chart is and what I would succeed at better for the team.”

Bonner was on campus for the March 1 Junior Day, two weeks before everything shut down due to the COVID-19 outbreak. He already had a pretty good idea of what the program was all about then.

The resumption of talks just fortified everything. And he still kept watch with Baylor even after the talks in the spring focused on defensive back.

“I still weighed my pros and cons for my Top 6 and knew I still loved Baylor for Baylor,’’ Bonner said, “and just not for the position they wanted me to play at the time, and they actually told me it was really for being an athlete and what I bring.’’

At three stars with a 5.6 rating, Bonner is Rivals No. 97 prospect in Texas.

Baylor made add a couple of more before and on Wednesday. However, look for the staff to be active in both the transfer portal as well as trying to finish the class on Feb. 3, 2021.
