Baylor’s offensive line reputation went from yeahhhhh to oh yeah in a matter of one of season.

Because of that, more offensive line prospects are giving this program a serious look. Argyle’s Wes Tucker didn’t want to wait any longer. A week before he takes his official visit to Baylor, the 2023 standout didn’t want to wait any longer.
On Saturday, he made his verbal commitment to the Bears. He’s the 11th member of the class. He is the second member of that position group. Tucker plans to enroll in January 2023.

“I just know that Baylor is the place for me, and I don’t want to be anywhere else,’’ Tucker said.

Tucker chose the Bears over eight other offers including Texas Tech, Kansas and San Diego State. Kansas State was also considered.

Pedigree helps in some cases. Argyle has produced several solid offensive line prospects over the years. Tucker had the fortune of backing up several D1 prospects in 2020. Those included Texas Tech signees Jack Turner and Sheriden Wilson and TCU signee Jasper Lott.

The relationship Tucker solidified with Baylor offensive line coach Eric Mateos mattered as well. Baylor was the first program to offer. Tucker never forgot that.

“He was the first coach to really recruit me, and he was the first to offer me as well,’’ Tucker said. “He’s a great and genuine man. He’s always gonna be straight up with you. He’s really helped me grow in this last year and I know that he’s the man that I want to play for.’’

When he arrives at Baylor, it’s going to be a matter of what fits better. Tucker said Mateos likely will want him to work out at both guard and tackle to see how his skill sets translate.

Tucker is going into his third season on the Argyle varsity roster. While he was primarily a backup in 2020, he did see a lot of playing time. He moved into a starting role last year. He’s expected to be an anchor for the 2022 squad. The Eagles were surprisingly upset in the Class 4A Division I regional semifinals last year.

Baylor still has more needs to fill with its offensive and defensive lines for this class. This move helps the Bears.

“I’m a fast paced, energetic player,’’ Tucker said. “My strengths are my athleticism and how fast I get to blocks and how physical and aggressive I play. I just need to work on my technique and skill. I’ve been working on it in the off-season.”
