Each week, the Big 12 coaches hold their pressers with the media to review the week that was and the week that is approaching. SicEmSports already posted Baylor coach Art Briles' comments on the weekly Big 12 coaches call. We also have video of Briles Monday presser.
Charlie Strong, Texas - The Longhorns (0-1) play host to Rice (1-0) Saturday: Plenty to say about what happened Saturday about the 38-3 loss. Strong pretty much tore into his offense."We can't go through another season with a bad offense. That cannot happen. We have some talented players. You look at J-Gray [running back Johnathan Gray]. He touched the ball eight times the other night. He's a factor. The ball needs to be fed to him anywhere from 15 to 20 to 25 times. Our offense has to run through our running backs, and we have to run the football...there was no up tempo.'' In the last three games against TCU, Arkansas and Notre Dame, Texas has collectively scored 20 points with a little over 500 yards.
David Beaty, Kansas - The Jayhawks (0-1) play host to Memphis (1-0) Saturday: The Jayhawks had a chance to give themselves a chance to tie Saturday's 41-38 loss to South Dakota St. Rather than spiking the ball to stop the clock, QB Montell Cozart took a fumbled snap and took a knee. Time ran out. “There’s absolutely no way [lack of snaps in the shotgun] we will use that as any kind of reasoning or excuse, because we take snaps under center every day — numerous snaps under center every day,” Beaty said. “It’s just a point right there that the center and the quarterback and everyone else involved — it’s not just those two guys — everyone else involved has to value each and every play. They have to have a high amount of concentration level.”
Bob Stoops, Oklahoma - The No. 19 Sooners (1-0) play at No. 25 Tennessee (1-0) Saturday: Stoops has taken his share of shots at the SEC. Oklahoma travels to Neyland Stadium Saturday in what figures to be a rowdy atmosphere. Tennessee appears to be gaining some traction under Butch Jones. When asked if Knoxville, will be a tough environment, Stoops fired back, "Come on, we’ve had Notre Dame and Florida St prior to that. We’ve been on this stage before."...Saturday against Akron, Stoops didn't wear a headset. That was on the advice he took from former OU coach Barry Switzer. Stoops said he will continue to experiment with it.
Mike Gundy, Oklahoma State - The Cowboys (1-0) play host to Central Arkansas (0-0) Saturday: One-time Baylor recruit Darrion Daniels made an impression in the opener at Central Michigan. He recorded a half sack. Gundy said Daniels is a little further along than one-time great James Castleman who made seven tackles in his first year.
Bill Snyder, Kansas State - The Wildcats (1-0) play at UT-San Antonio (0-1) Saturday: Starting quarterback Jesse Ertz is likely out for the remainder of the season with an apparent knee injury. Snyder confirmed it Monday. “Jesse is going to be out for quite some time. We will miss him. We feel badly about the loss and he will be there. He has been a wonderful individual for us, very representative of our value system, of our team and really developing as a leader. I am quite confident he will stay invested in what we are doing and will be very helpful to all of his teammates. We will move on.” Ertz suffered the injury moments into his first series on an awkward hit. Joe Hubener is the apparent starter for the foreseeable future.
Dana Holgorsen, West Virginia - The Mountaineers (1-0) play host to Liberty (0-1) Saturday: Holgorsen said he was surprised by how easily his team handled Georgia Southern over the weekend. The Mountaineers won, 44-0. But now it’s time for Week 2 against the Flames. "It doesn't matter who you play, in Week 2, you're going to be searching for improvement," Holgorsen said Monday during the Big 12 coaches teleconference. "It may not have affected the game on specific things, but there's still plenty of things we need to look at to get better."
Kliff Kingsbury, Texas Tech - The Red Raiders (1-0) play host to UTEP (0-1) Saturday: A pair of Red Raiders earned Big 12 player of the week honors. QB Patrick Mahomes was the offensive player of the week. Jakeem Grant was the special teams player of the week. As for Mahomes (425 passing yards, 4 TDs), he made many changes during the game. “Not a ton. But there were some times that he got us into better plays. Still would like to have some back, a couple decisions he’d like to have back. But for the most part, like I said, I thought he was pretty sharp.” As for the poor defensive performance, defensive coordinator David Gibbs said: ““It is what it is. I’ve said all along, you are what you put on tape on Saturday afternoons and obviously we didn’t play very good, don’t know why – I’m still in the process of figuring out. But I’ve done this a long time and I’m not going to panic; we’re not going to panic.’’
Paul Rhoads, Iowa State - The Cyclones (1-0) play host to Iowa (1-0) Saturday: It’s the annual battle for the Cy-Hawk Trophy in Ames. Iowa State won this last year, 20-17, in Iowa City. Iowa leads the overall series, 40-22. Top offensive guard Daniel Burton appears to be ready for the matchup with the Hawkeyes. He was recovering from a knee injury. DE Trent Taylor is back with the team after not playing against Northern Iowa. He was suspended for a violation of team rules. A Jack Trice record-crowd of 61,500 watched the 2015 season opener.
Gary Patterson, TCU - The No. 2 Horned Frogs (1-0) play host to Stephen F. Austin (0-1) Saturday: Heisman Trophy candidate, QB Trevone Boykin, was pedestrian in the season opening 23-17 win at Minnesota. Boykin was 26-42-1 with two touchdowns. “He’ll get better,” Patterson said. “Playing a tough game at Minnesota, I hope, will help us down the road playing in Lubbock, playing in Manhattan, playing in Ames, playing in Stillwater, playing in Norman — the five road games we have left. Because I think all of them are going to be the same way.”
