It only takes one to begin a movement. At least, that’s what it seems like with Baylor 2023 tight end commit Matthew Klopfenstein.
With the Bears going into Arizona to nab this offensive edge players, they could be going for a second in that state.
At the very least, things are off to a good start with 2024 Scottsdale (AZ) Desert Mountain’s Dillon Hipp. The Bears recently offered.
“[Klopfenstein] definitely been a resource for me to figure out more about the program,’’ Hipp said. “I haven’t been able to get out there yet but also has told me about what the people are like there and how the coaching staff treats recruits, which is a big thing for me.”
Well, Baylor came to him. Offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes went out to Arizona to check in on Hipp. There are hopes that Hipp can make his way to Waco sometime during the June summer camp season. Time will tell.
But when you’re 6-6 and have a wingspan that won’t quit, you’ll work within a schedule.
“I get a good vibe from the staff there, as they are all very welcoming,’’ Hipp said. “I love how they use TEs.’’
Hipp prides himself on his route running and agility. Hipp said Grimes told him he likes his hands He still wants to become a better blocker.
And Hipp is noticing how Grimes has transformed the offense into a tight end destination. Baylor uses a lot of 11 and 12 personnel formations. Hence, the Klopfenstein commitment.
“It shows me that Baylor is a place where tight ends want to be,’’ he said. “I’ve since looked into Baylor more and have seen how the community is very tight around the university which I like. Me and Klop are friends so it’s good to have someone who’s been there and experienced the place to be telling me more about it.”
The 2022 season could be a more productive one for Hipp. He only caught 15 passes for 152 yards along with a tight end. Such is life for a tight end in a passing offense.
Yet playing that position is never going to be about stats. What it’s going to be about is being an effective and physical blocker on the edge coupled as a dual-threat pass catcher.
The Bears are among the first six to offer including Oregon, Iowa State, Washington State, Northern Iowa and New Mexico State. Should he go on a summer camp tour, that should change.
Rivals does not have a rating for Hipp as of yet.
