Old Southwest Conference Rivals will meet for the first time in 25 years. Baylor and Houston face each other for the 28th time and the first since 1995 when they play at McLane Stadium at 11:00 a.m. next Saturday. The game will be televised on FOX.
Additionally, Baylor and Houston will play a future home-and-home series as part of the agreement. For now, Baylor officials would like for the series to be played within the next 10 years.
"We are excited to announce a matchup against Houston at McLane next Saturday," said Baylor Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Mack Rhoades, who was the AD at Houston before he moved to Missouri then Baylor.
"Our administrative staff, coaches, and student-athletes have worked incredibly hard to prepare for this season, and deserve as many games as possible. UH and the city of Houston will always hold a special place in my families' hearts. I want to thank Dr. Khator and Chris Pezman for working with us to make this happen in a very short time. We look forward to cheering alongside our loyal students and fans next Saturday."
Houston was scheduled to play Memphis on Friday. However, Memphis had to pause football activities because of a COVID outbreak. That game has since been postponed and needs to be rescheduled.
Bruce Feldman of The Atlantic first broke the news. SicEmSports soon confirmed it. A source earlier on Saturday said: "We may have just completed a Hail Mary.''
“Our student-athletes and staff are excited for this opportunity,” Baylor head coach Dave Aranda said. “I’m really happy for our players. I’ve known Coach Holgorsen for a long time and I know several coaches on his staff. I know they will be ready. I am grateful for our players to have this chance to compete and we look forward to facing a good Houston team.”
The last time Baylor and Houston met was in the final year of the Southwest Conference (1995). Baylor won, 47-7 in the Astrodome. Baylor leads the all-time series, 14-13-1. Houston is coached by former West Virginia head coach Dana Holgorsen. Holgorsen took over at UH in 2019.
Baylor's game with Louisiana Tech, scheduled for Saturday at McLane Stadium, was postponed because of a COVID-19 outbreak within the Bulldogs' football program. While publicly both schools said they would look to try a replacement date, that was a longshot. The only date that would have worked was for Dec. 12, the date after the final week of Big 12 play. Baylor officials preferred to keep that date available in case a Big 12 game gets postponed.
