Note: With Baylor opening the NCAA tournament on Friday, there will not be a Baylor Blitz. However, we’re putting together a couple of notebooks this week on certain targets.
Patton getting more serious
Tenaha (TX) 2022 athlete Jeremy Patton’s status is growing as a recruit. His offer list has exploded to 17 that includes Oklahoma, Michigan and Arkansas.
However, the relationship with Baylor is not impacted at this point. Conversations with the staff occur almost daily.
“I just got off the phone with the staff when you and I started talking,’’ Patton said. “They’re just getting ready for spring ball. And I’m going through my spring stuff.’’
Patton said about a month ago that Baylor was very high on his list. In fact, there’s talk about setting up a virtual tour in the near future.
But now he’s in the spring season where’s going to combine-like events. On Sunday, he attended the Under Armour event at Arlington Martin. He came away with rave reviews.
“I think everything went pretty well,’’ Patton said. “We basically had a mini combine and did everything but the bench press. I feel I did good in the drills and was decent in the 1v1s.’’
Patton said he has a Top 5 but said he hasn’t determined when he plans to release it. It would be a bit of a jolt if Baylor wasn’t on it.
One of the keys for Patton is for him to get on the Baylor campus. He said he hasn’t done that yet and really wants to make that work. That could be doing a self-guided tour during BU spring football or waiting until the dead period ends on May 31. There is a recommendation for the dead period to lift after that day.
“Oh yeah no doubt,’’ said Patton when asked if the relationship with Baylor has become stronger. “It’s really all in the air [about a commitment timeline]. I don’t know if I wanna make that decision tomorrow or within the next two months.’’
East Texas RB update
Tyler Legacy 2022 running back Jamarion Miller has established himself as one of the top running back targets in the country.
He’s the No. 69 rated player in Texas and the No. 39 rated running back across the United States. And there’s a pretty good bet that when Rivals does its next round of rankings, Miller could reach four stars if not the 250.
Baylor’s push for the powerful runner is real. Nothing is guaranteed, of course. This recruitment appears to be in the middle of a long journey.
“We had a zoom call [Sunday] and it went really good,’’ Miller said.
Miller had an incredible season in 2020 for the Raiders. He rushed for 1,631 yards and 20 scores (9.8 ypc). He also caught 464 yards worth of pass (16.6 ypc) along with eight other touchdowns. All three of those numbers led all Raider receivers.
While Miller hasn’t personally announced a Top 5 or Top 10, Baylor is in that category somewhere. Other top contenders are Oklahoma State, Alabama, Florida, Texas and USC. Ole Miss and Mississippi State are working their way into this.
Time will tell if Miller, nicknamed “Jam”, can get to Baylor during the Bears spring workouts or will wait until the summer.

>When Baylor started talking with Killeen Shoemaker 2022 athlete Omari Evans, there really wasn’t a focus on how the staff saw him. Baylor offered him this past November as an athlete. But with the changes on the coaching staff, the focus is now at defensive back. Evans is teammates with 2021 signee, wide receiver Monaray Baldwin.
Evans is one of those tweener recruits. His list of 17 offers is mixed between P5 and G5 programs. For example, Kansas State, Indiana, SMU, Rutgers and Marshall have offered.
>Cedar Hill 2022 DB Jalon Peoples was all set to announce his commitment decision at the end of February. But he suddenly announced on social media that those plans have been shelved and that he needed more time to figure out where he wanted to school.
When asked if he was still considering Baylor at this moment, Peoples said, “I don’t know.’’
Baylor will continue to work its end of things to remain a contender. For now, it’s hard to handicap what its chances actually are.
>Rivals No. 165 and Baton Rouge (LA) Madison Prep Academy DE Quency Wiggins released his Top 10 on Monday and included Baylor. The others LSU, South Carolina, Auburn, Oregon, Mississippi State, USC, Michigan, Tennessee and Ole Miss. LSU is considered the heavy favorite since it’s right in Wiggins’ backyard.
>Baylor has offered La Vernia (TX) 2023 offensive lineman Barrett Eddlemon. The Bears are the first to extend an offer to the 6-4, 255-pount tackle.
