JAMES AKINJO
(That stretch where you hit the 3-pointer and reverse layup after the rebound) That was a huge stretch for us. We couldn’t do it without getting stops. I think once we got the stop, we wanted to come down and take the best shot possible. And I think we did. Credit to my teammates.
We learned that we’re tough, we’re resilient. We’re going to fight no matter what the circumstances, , no matter who we’re playing against, we have the ability to really fight and compete and get a win.
(Winning a conference title) Definitely. One of the things I had on my list was to be a winner. And I showed that I could do that playing with this group of guys. I’m just super happy.
(When they started chanting one more year) I didn’t hear that. They said that. wow, I didn’t hear that.
(BU got off to hot start and then Iowa State got hot) If you watch closely, they were running specific action that was giving us a lot of trouble. They scored a lot on that action. Credit to them, they ran some great stuff.
(Kendall and Jeremy) You say they’re not freshmen, these two dudes are a big part of our success. In order for us to win, we need them to be stars like they are. Early on in the year, they were just learning the scene but they were productive and really helping our team. But now I think everybody in the country knows these two are NBA talent players, and I think through the course of the season they solidified that, and there’s not even a question, and I like playing alongside them.
(Feeding off Kendall block) That was a huge block. That was an energy giver for the crowd and for us. Credit to Kendall for putting his reputation as a jumper on the line. It was redemption. In the first half it didn’t go that way, but he showed a lot of heart.
(Won five straight going into postseason) I feel really good about this team. I feel we’re playing some of our best basketball right now. We can still get a lot better, but we just got to keep going.
(What does a Big 12 championship mean to you) It means a lot. I’ve been productive in other program in scoring and assists, but I haven’t had a chance to win a conference championship and really win at a high level. I’m just so thankful for this opportunity.
KENDALL BROWN
(What did y’all do when you lost the 25-point lead) Yeah, basketball is a game of runs. Each team in the Big 12 is a great team. Each team is able to make a big run. And our team, like James said, is resilient and tough. So, getting into the huddles, we just stayed together.
(Lost key players but pulled together) Each guy on our team is ready to play and ready to go. Each of them brings it every day in practice. When someone goes down, it’s like next man up mentality. When their number is called, they’re ready, and everyone has faith in each other.
(Block dunk) Yeah I was going to get that one.
(Winning championship) It’s a great feeling, it means a lot. Last year’s team was a great team, but just being part of this new squad, there’s a lot of different people. Playing with these guys, it’s a great feeling to be back to back Big 12 champs.
