Baylor’s futility on offense in 2020 came to a head Tuesday afternoon when head coach Dave Aranda dismissed both offensive coordinator Larry Fedora and wide receivers coach Jorge Munoz.

David Smoak first reported that Fedora and Baylor agreed to part company. SicEmSports later confirmed and then reported along with other media outlets that Munoz had also been fired. Several members of the strength and conditioning staff were also removed.

Searches to find replacements will begin immediately. The status of offensive line coach Joe Wickline, running backs coach Justin Johnson and tight ends coach Shawn Bell remains unclear. Their fate could be determined by the new OC.

From the beginning, Fedora’s one-back approach just didn’t mesh with the offensive personnel he inherited. His attempts to keep senior QB Charlie Brewer in the pocket and work off a dink and dunk approach seemed to finesse. Fedora altered the approach by allowing Brewer to move around the pocket and use his legs. However, it just could not sustain any consistency and never presented explosive play capability. Frustrated by these events, Brewer transferred to Utah.

For the season, Baylor finished 118th (there are 127 D1 programs) in total offense (310.2), 123rd in rushing (90.3) and 73rd in passing (219.9). Add all that together and that’s why Baylor’s scoring offense was 99th (23.3). The first team offense broke 24 points once (32 vs. Kansas State).

With Brewer struggling and no big-play threats, Baylor skill players also suffered. No running back surpassed 200 yards. No wide receiver surpassed 500 yards.

Fedora had a solid number of returning offensive players between Brewer, running backs Trestan Ebner and John Lovett along with wide receivers Tyquan Thornton, RJ Sneed, Josh Fleeks and Gavin Holmes who was coming off a knee injury.

Baylor is hoping to find a fit that will take advantage of a new starting quarterback in which the competition will be between Jacob Zeno, Gerry Bohanon and Blake Shapen all return. The program also welcomes 2021 signee Kyron Drones from Pearland Shadow Creek in January.

SicEmSports will keep you posted as these searches unfold.

UPDATE:
Baylor confirms both OC Larry Fedora and WR coach Jorge Munoz are no longer part of the coaching staff.

Nothing yet on OL coach Joe Wickline. Again, I never definitively said he was gone. Said his position was tenuous. We'll see if he survives this.
