They get out there at 9:30 am. We'll get you an update on some of the topics Art Briles covered.
Here is the Q&A with Baylor's HC.
(A week into practice) "It doesn't feel that long. Starting Wednesday that was when we felt like we really started out fall camp. It's going all right. Defensively we're certainly farther along than we've been in a while. Offensively we still got a few glitches with losing two outside receivers and an outside guy that played a lot of games last year. We're still finding our timing in that situation. Our offensive linemen have really been good and our running game has been good."
(Defensive depth) "We're really strong up front and linebackers. The secondary probably isn't quite as deep. Across the board I think we're in good shape."
(What are you hoping to see out of Saturday scrimmage) "Preciseness, assignment, detail, all the things you look for early in camp. Guys making plays. More than anything else the predictability of the game on both sides of the ball and understanding the situations."
(Tight ends Tre'Von Armstead and Gus Penning) "Those guys are really good. LaQuan has kind of taken off as an instant cult hero. They're all three going to help us. That's the great part about it is that we have tremendous depth there. All three of those guys bring something a little different to the table and we're excited about that."
(Have you ever seen anyone become a cult hero after one catch?) "I don't think anybody has. Maybe Bullet Bob Hayes when he caught his first touchdown pass. Everybody says let's play a fast receiver. I've never seen anything like it quite honestly. But if you're different you get treated different and he's different."
(ESPN visit on Thursday) "They went to nine schools in five days and we're one of them. So it speaks well for our national perception. It's something we take great responsibility in and we want to uphold it."
(Is the intensity starting to increase as camp has progressed?) " You hope the intensity is always up where it needs to be. I think the mentality increases a little bit because in camp you kind of get locked into assignment detail, assignment detail, instead of of hey this is why we're doing what we're doing to offset the other team's schemes.
So now it's more about learning and relearning what you already know and rolling from there. But as we get a little bit deeper we'll get specifically into SMU."
(Why don't colleges scrimmage?) "That's a great question. I would love to have a scrimmage. In high school you get scrimmages and in the NFL you get four preseason games. In college you walk out there it's for real. I would love to have one 10 days before the first game.
There's always unknowns at the first of the season. You think you know but you don't know. It gives you a chance to really teach in an atmosphere where there's not a score on the board."
(Zach Smith) "I like who he is as a person first and foremost. He's a great person, a great leader and will be a great addition to our program. He's a great football player, a big guy, 6-3½ and 220 right now and a big arm.''
(Jarell Broxton and Spencer Drango next to each other in team photo forming 61-58) "We're thinking about SMU. That's all we're thinking about."
On the last question, that's very Bill Belichick or Bryce Petty of Art.
