>If you missed it elsewhere, Baylor’s 2023 class should be in the 23-25 range. The Bears are currently at 15. There’s a little more work to be done with both the offensive and defensive lines.
When they landed Bryson Washington earlier this week, that finished their need at running back. Both Washington and Mineola’s Dawson Pendergrass are the two.
>While Baylor stills feel very good about where it is, Covington, GA 2023 offensive guard Sean Thompkins released a Top 4 of Baylor, Tennessee, Kentucky and Florida. He has taken visits to Baylor, Florida and Kentucky.
>The recruiting dead period begins this Monday and runs through July 24.
Coleman express Baylor journey
Mesquite Horn 2023 safety DJ Coleman said earlier in the week that he likely will take his official visit after the football season. That means December.
But his quick turnaround between the June 18 camp and returning for an unofficial visit on Wednesday appeared to be what he and his family needed before he committed on Thursday.
“Just how hard the whole staff put in effort and showed they wanted me really,’’ Coleman said. “I’ve never gotten that kinda love from a school.’’
Coleman had been on the radar. However, the Bears were good at safety until last week when Javeon Wilcox flipped to TCU. Then, the staff had to review other options. Coleman was the next choice.
“I was talking daily with the coaches before my visit yesterday,’’ Coleman said. “But Saturday really put everything on the map for me.’’
Baylor’s pursuit actually pushed Coleman’s market. Prior to the Baylor offer, Minnesota was the only P5. Following Baylor’s offer, Indiana and Florida State extended.
Official Visit Weekend No. 3
A look at who is coming in this weekend. This will be the final weekend of visits.
Notable: Baylor’s need for more help along the defensive line continues. This is his only known official visit. It would seem that this recruitment will extend into the season and maybe December. Baylor is just now getting to know him better after offering him in May.
Notable: Another one of those highly rated defensive backs that the coaching staff would love to close. That likely won’t happen on this visit. But Wilson, who took an OV to Nebraska last week, will be making at least his third appearance on the Baylor campus. All BU can keep doing is doing what it’s doing.
Notable: He committed in April and has been very solid with this coaching staff ever since. The unofficial visit for spring practice back on March 24 was really the difference. His commitment locked down all of Baylor’s needs for tight ends for this class.
Notable: He’s really thin, and he’s really picked up a lot of momentum thanks to the May evaluation period. The Baton Rouge product has also earned P5 offers from Missouri, Kentucky and Vanderbilt. Time will tell where this one is headed.
Notable: One of the first members of the 2023 class. He’s been as locked in as anyone in this class. But he’s very quiet and goes about his work. That meant something as his recent Rivals rating improved from 5.5 to 5.7.
Notable: Put him on the commit watch alert status this weekend. Thornton is a very talented two-way player. However, Baylor likes him to play secondary. There still is a need for some defensive backs in the class now that the safety position appears to be settled.
Notable: Recruiting is weird. At this time last week, we told you that Wilson released his Top 8 and Baylor was on it. We also told you that Wilson likely wasn’t going to take an official visit to Baylor. Things change. Baylor must feel like it has a chance now that Wilson agreed to take an official visit. Texas Tech still appears to be the team to beat. However, it doesn’t appear to be insurmountable.
Notable: This is your typical big Midwestern young big man who can play tackle. The Bears were able to develop a connection through offensive line coach Eric Mateos and convince Clements to come down for a visit. He could be another that goes on the commit watch alert status. To be sure, he has P5 credibility with offers from Iowa State, Oklahoma State, Minnesota, Kansas and Kansas State.
Saturday Campers
Will hope to add more names by the time Saturday’s third camp begins. In terms of notable names, some of this may be impacted by the state 7 on 7 state tournament taking place this weekend in College Station.
The camp is sold out. This is the final one until July 30. There likely will more names there.
