Baylor’s defense has earned such a reputation that it has changed how elite defensive prospects view this program.

Look no further than Frisco Lone Star 4-star 2021 defensive back Jaylon Braxton who was on campus this past Saturday checking out the first scrimmage of the spring football season.

“Oh, I really enjoyed it,’’ Braxton said. “I liked the way all of the coaches coach. Liked the way the players took care of each other and the energy everyone had. And I also like the scheme of defense that they play….Baylor is one of my top choices right now.’’

That isn’t too surprising. Baylor defenders collected 19 interceptions in 2021 and returned two of those for scores.

For his part, Braxton is one of the most highly coveted defensive backs in Texas. He may just be at 170 pounds. However, he makes up for it with how he plays physically and having a knack of shutting down the opposing team’s No. 1 receiver.

Braxton has collected 22 offers to this point including Michigan State, Ole Miss and Oklahoma State. But Baylor has placed itself in position. Braxton is developing a relationship with defensive backs coach Kevin Curtis.

“I have a good relationship with him,’’ Braxton said. “He was just talking about how I can come in and play early and that I am a great fit for their scheme.’’

This isn’t Braxton’s first trip to Baylor. He knows his way around the campus. A multiple time visitor is always a good thing.

“I like the environment at Baylor,’’ he said, “and the people around the staff. Everything is great.’’

An all-state performer for the Rangers, a Class 5A Division I power, Braxton finished the 2021 season with 35 solo tackles, 15 assisted tackles, four TFLs, 15 PBUs, three interceptions and a forced fumble. Indeed, he had an impact every time he played.

“The coaches told me they like my [football] IQ, physicality, ball skills and speed,’’ he said.

Braxton is using that speed during the track season. He runs in the 100 and a leg in the 4x100 and 4x200 relays. His personal best in the 100 is 10.83.

This appears to be a recruitment that will take some time. Braxton said he is considering taking an official visit to Baylor. A date hasn’t been determined. For now, he said the goal is to return for the spring game on April 23.

With a 5.8 rating, Rivals rates Braxton as the No. 39 rated defensive back and the No. 64 player in Texas.
