Here are the highlights of his 10 minutes with the media. We'll have the Big 12 Coaches Corner later. A reminder that with the bye week this week, there is no lunch presser with the local Waco media. That resumes next week.

On Philip Montgomery’s start at Tulsa: “I don’t think it’s a surprise. Phillip has a great staff. Some of the guys on his staff were with us for a long period of time. They know what they’re doing. I’m very proud for him. He’s doing exactly what I thought he’d do. He’s building a team that’s formidable. It’s hard to judge after two games but they’ve certainly come off the blocks at a pretty good pace.’’
On using the width of the football field: “We’ve been doing it since the 1990s when I was at Stephenville. We spread the ball to create space. Not everything is going to fit into the same passing tree. Ours is a little different. If you have 53 1/3 yards, you play with it. That’s always been our philosophy.’’
On the defensive concerns: “It’s a concern. We’ve got to start faster and be more dominant. That’s more assignment to detail. We have to have a more active defense. That’s something we’ll address. [Defensive coordinator] Phil [Bennett] will address. We know we’ve got the people over there. It has to all gel at the same time.
“But we had three turnovers in the same quarter. I don’t think that’s ever happened in my time at Baylor. We have to play a more a complete game. We’re not near where we have to be to make another run at another Big 12 title."
On finding cohesiveness: “We have to have everybody on the page and reading the same lines with the same meaning. That comes with reps and time. As the season progresses, we have to play up to the level of our capability. And we will. There’s not any question about that."
On the lulls in the offense: “It’s just not us. That’s the part that’s a concern. We’re very good protecting the ball for the last 4-5 years. Outside of a little thing in [2012] from about 2011 on, we’ve been really good. There’s always an emphasis. We have to learn with Seth to help him and he has to help us. It’s not anything that can’t be fixed. But that’s what happens when you’re breaking in a new QB. You get to know everything about him and his DNA. Hopefully, [the turnovers] will are not becoming a trend for us.’’
On the balanced offense [Baylor had three 100-yard rushers]: “We’re not sitting around patting ourselves on the back. We understand we could have played an entirely better football game.’’
