Couple of football tidbits

I recently talked to both Shon Brown and Roy Miller.

Shon said that Baylor is still his favorite.

Roy said that he doesn't have any favorites, but did say that Baylor and Texas Tech will be in his top 5 (he doesn't know who the other 3 will be yet), and that he will make a decision when he feels right, but doesn't know when that will be.

Just thought you guys might like to hear a few updates on two of Baylor's top prospects.

Jovan Adams, 6'1 basketball prospect, class of 2004

Jovan Adams is a 6'1, 180 lb. combo guard out of Gulf Shores Academy in Houston. Rivals lists him with offers from Florida, Baylor, Connecticut, Houston and Illinois. He says that he is currently leaning towards Florida.

This year he averaged 32 points, 6 assists and 5 rebounds per game.

Tony Jones, 6'7 hoops prospect, class of 2005

Prepstars.com is reporting that Baylor has recently started recruiting Tony Jones, a 6'7 wing player out of Hill College.

Interestingly enough, Jones did not receive much D1 interest coming out of high school, so he enrolled at a D2 school, then transferred to Hill. Even though he has not played any games for them yet, he is already receiving interest from Creighton, Baylor, TCU and Wichita State.

Henry Dugat, hoops prospect, class of 2005

Henry Dugat

>Henry Dugat is a 6'0, 175 lb. point guard prospect from Dayton Texas. The Baylor coaches have been seen watching him play, and there is some interest there.

I don't have a great deal of information on this player, but I can tell you that his stock has skyrocketed within the last year. I have been keeping up with his stats a bit this season, and it seems that he is averaging somewhere around 25+ points per game.

He went from being somewhat of an unknown last year to now being one of the higher regarded players in the entire state. For a point of reference, before this current season began Texas Roundball.com had him slotted as the #14 player in the state, but after their revised rankings came out recently, he shot up all the way to #3, ahead of such highly regarded prospects as Calvin Miles, Fendi Onobun, Rashad Woods and A.J. Abrams.

I cannot personally vouch for this, but I heard one report which described him as "T.J. Ford with a jump shot."

Rell Porter, 6'7 basketball prospect from Pittsburg, class of 2004

The 192 lb. power forward Is still being recruited by Baylor.

As reported on this board a while back, he had committed to Stephen F. Austin, but then broke his commitment to them. Previously, he had received interest from SMU, OU, Penn State, Texas Tech, and a few others.

Personally, I don't really know what to make of this guy. Some of the "recruiting gurus" had raved about him being one of the better up and coming players, even a top 100 national guy, but then others have graded him very lowly. Since I've never seen him play, I can't really say one way or the other. I do know that over the years he has piled up a fair number of all district/all state honors at Pittsburg.

Last year I think he averaged 17 points and 8 rebounds a game while playing in a 3A district. Early on this season, he is averaging 32 a game.

I'm going to keep an eye on this one.

Englebert Cherrington, 6'7 basketball prospect, class of 2004

Englebert Cherrington is a 6'7 240 pound JUCO sophomore who originally hails from Belize, but now plays for Midland College.

He has been receiving some love from the Baylor coaches, but the latest rumor on the street is that he might be going to UH, because his current JUCO coach there(Shannon Hays) is expected to take a job on Tom Penders's new staff.

Jesus Verdejo, 6'4 basketball prospect, class of 2004

Jesus Verdejo

Just a quick recap on this player who is being recruited by Baylor for this year.

Jesus Verdejo is a 6'5, 190 lb. three star wing player who is reported to have tremendous leaping ability, and who has also displayed great athleticism on defense and in transition. Word is he has nice range on his jumper, and can knock down the three pointer.

Last year Jesus signed a letter of intent with Temple University after he graduated from high school, but TU refused to permit him to enroll over an academic objection. From that point, he chose to spend a year prepping at the Winchendon School in Massachussetts, and since that time has obtained the necessary credentials to enroll in a div 1 school as a full qualifier.

Originally, Verdejo hails from Puerto Rico, and he played for his national team there in the 2003 world games.

As a senior at Miami Christian in 2003, Jesus was named first team all Dade county and also first team all state(class 1A), as he averaged 23.4 points and 3.5 assists per game. During the summer he participated in summer league AAU ball, as he played for the Miami Tropics in south Florida.

Since the time he originally began his the recruiting process, he has drawn interest at one time or another from Louisville, Marquette, Memphis, South Florida, Temple, Florida State, South Alabama, Connecticut, Baylor and Miami.

Here are some links and notes on him of interest

Yusef Baker, 6'8 hoops prospect, class of 2004

Yusef Baker is a 6'8, 220 pound power forward from the College of Southern Idaho in Twin Falls, ID.

Hoopmasters.com is reporting that Baylor has showed some interest in this player. HOWEVER, Rivals.com just reported a few days ago that he recently announced a top 3 of Tulsa, Alabama, and Nebraska.

Coming out of high school in Florida, Baker was considered a top 50 national player by some, and was named the Class 6A Gatorade high school player of the year. He originally played at the University of Southern Florida as a freshman, then transferred to CSI to play this past season.

An assistant on the CSI staff described Baker this way:

"a great rebounder and shot-blocker. He’s very athletic, plays good defense and loves to dunk. His offensive game is not quite at the level of his defensive game at this point, but he plays well within our system. He can shoot the ball out to 15 feet and is around a 50-percent shooter at that range. However, he gets most of his buckets close in and after offensive rebounds.”

There are several good articles on his Rivals profile page, for those of you with ultimate ticket memberships who are interested in seeing them.

Calvin Miles, 6'6 basketball recruit, class of 2005

Calvin Miles

Calvin Miles is a 6'6 junior forward out of Dallas Skyline.

Here is a clip about him from Texas Roundball.com

"Calvin had an excellent weekend showing off his sweet left handed stroke. He got to the hoop and finished with several big dunks. An excellent ball handler and passer, Miles is definitely an ELITE recruit in 2005." - LINK - texas roundball

He was the district 10-5A newcomer of the year this past season as a sophomore.

I'm working on getting together a little more detailed scouting report on him. Pretty impressive credentials, based on what I know about him so far.
