MBB - FINAL/OT: Kansas State 97, 95; Bears 10-5, 0-3 (RECAP/QUOTES/NOTES)

By Baylor SID
On his first trip back to the Ferrell Center after 19 years on Baylor's staff, Jerome Tang led his Kansas State Wildcats to a 97-95 win over the 19th-ranked Bears Saturday night.

Baylor got 23 and 22 points, respectively, from guards Adam Flagler and Keyonte George, but Caleb Lohner missed a potential game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer as the Bears fell to 10-5 overall and 0-3 in the Big 12.

Markquis Nowell scored a game-high 32 points, going 12-for-13 from the free throw line, and also fed Ismael Massoud for a go-ahead 3-pointer with 31.6 seconds left for his 14th assist of the game. The Wildcats, unranked going into a week when they won a pair of road games against ranked opponents, improved to 14-1 overall and atop the Big 12 standings at 3-0.

Fighting an uphill battle against Kansas State most of the game, the Bears got it into overtime when Jalen Bridges hit a 3-pointer with 20.7 seconds left in regulation to tie it up at 86-86.

Bridges was one of five double-figure scorers for Baylor, finishing with 11 points and seven rebounds. Flo Thamba had 14 points and seven boards, while Langston Love scored seven of his 10 points in the first half.

Keyontae Johnson just missed a double-double for the Wildcats, finishing with 24 points and nine rebounds. K-State shot 53% for the game, including 11-of-25 from outside the arc.

Baylor goes back on the road to face West Virginia (10-5, 0-3) at 6 p.m. CST Wednesday in Morgantown, W. Va., with both teams looking for their first win in conference.

QUOTES

Scott Drew
If we’re going to lose, losing to Coach Tang is someone I would want to lose to. He’s done a remarkable job in a short period of time, and I love him like a brother. As far as our team goes, I thought our effort was better, I thought our defense in transition was better. Our 21 to 12 assist to turnover ratio was better, our rebounding was better. At the end of the day, execution down the stretch, we shouldn’t have given up a 3. When the players don’t execute it, it’s on me, so I have to do a better job with that. The last one to fall out of bounds, we’ve got to execute that better as well. We’ve got to keep working on game-ending execution. It’s a great Big 12 environment. I want to thank our fans, I thought they were phenomenal. I want to apologize to them for two heartbreaking losses. I know it’s not easy, but we’ll find a way to get better.

(Playing against Jerome) I tried to explain that before the game. If we would have won, I would have enjoyed that more instead of losing. But I know it’s still tough on the other person, that’s why you don’t want to play family. It’s tough when they’re in conference. I remember when my brother was looking at a job in conference once, and thank God he didn’t go there.

(What impresses you about KSU) I think Coach Tang has done a great job with their chemistry, their grit, their toughness, they play a fun style. Nowell is an unbelievable player. Through three games, averaging what he’s averaging, and I tell you it’s a big advantage having six-year guys compared to freshmen. You have to really compete against older guys like that. Nowell has tons of maturity in his game, and I credit Coach Tang and his staff for that and I credit him. Keyontae Johnson when he scored 20 against us at Florida we knew how good he was. You don’t get SEC preseason player of the year accolades if you’re not special. So those two guys are not only really good players, but I think they’re good culture and team guys.

(Is Nowell the most improved player in Big 12) There’s not many people averaging 30 and 10.

(What will it take to get over hump) The mental mistakes down the stretch. We’ve got to get better shots in the overtime, better attention to detail, so I would say the execution and attention to detail.

(What did you say to Coach Tang beforehand) Once you start the game, you’re not paying attention. You’re locked in on your team. We coached against each other in practice for 19 years, so we pretty much knew what each other was doing.

(Talented team, parity of league) I think with the COVID stuff, the fifth and sixth-year guys really negate talent too. You can be a talented 13 of 14-year-old and it’s hard to beat a 19-year-old. We’ve got three freshmen who are playing and getting better, we got guys in different roles that were role players that we’re expecting more of, and until we can get better chemistry with that…. The goal of every coach is to not have a one-possession game because we all know anything can happen. If Noel can make another shot that deep again on one try, Dane doesn’t even shoot them that far. Then his bank with the left hand, that’s one possession games and that’s why you can’t let games go to one possession.

(Jalen hitting the 3 to send it to overtime, gain confidence in this one) I thought Jalen did some good things, 11 (points) and 7 (rebounds). He’s starting to take a step forward with his confidence, the guys’ confidence. At the end of the game, he’s been through the wars of the Big 12. But we need him to be good, and we need him to be special.

I really like this group. Losing is really hard, but they’re really good representatives of Baylor besides the wins and losses right now. So, we’ve got to get better, and we’ll find a way to do that. Thank the crowd for being there and supporting us. Don’t forget about us or leave us just yet.

(on the play where Adam turned it over, were you trying to get it switched to Massoud, so you could drive to the rim) Yes, because we kept playing out of that. But whenever you have two on you, you want to get rid of the ball. Markquis found Massoud, we didn’t find Jalen Bridges. Credit them for making that and us not executing.

Baylor DB Lorando "Snaxx" Johnson enters NCAA portal

Johnson, the native from Lancaster, who was suspended for the Armed Forces Bowl against Air Force, is leaving. He played in the first 12 games with 16 tackles including 1.5 TFL. He had five PBUs and a forced fumble.

Originally, Baylor had him as the Star in place of Jalen Pitre coming out of spring ball. However, they wanted to move him to CB. That was kinda meh as he had his issues.

Tevin Williams started at DB for Baylor in place of Johnson in the Armed Forces Bowl. He is the 7th player to enter the portal.

Baylor transfer portal QB tidbits Part II (UPDATE)

Here is the latest...

Again, Baylor is pretty much in a secondary market where whoever comes likely is not going to challenge for the starting job. But the candidate will be in position to help with veteran experience. Plus, it could be looking at someone to be the bridge as the staff looks to covet and secure the 2024 QB.

>One who fits that is Texas native in former Texas Tech QB and was at Michigan for the past two years is Alan Bowman who has one year of eligibility remaining. Bowman is visiting Baylor this Friday and Saturday. He's also visiting Texas State (Wednesday and Thursday) and UNT (Saturday pm and Sunday). And the way I understand it, he will given a chance to compete for the starting job. We'll see how that develops.
A decision could come Monday or Tuesday.

Bowman was actually pretty good for the Red Raiders throwing for 2,638 yards, completing 69 percent of his passes for 17 TDs in 2018. Bowman, who played at Grapevine High School, threw for 1,020 yards in 2019 before he got hurt and never played after the first three games. Then he bounced back in 2020 throwing for 1,620 yards and 10 scores. He then went into the portal and ended up in Michigan. We'll see how that goes.

>Baylor probably was never in this. But Virginia QB Brennan Armstrong is taking an official visit to NC State on Wednesday. Indications are he will go there because his former OC Robert Anae at UVA is now in Raleigh.

>Former Rockwall and Mississippi State QB Braedyn Locke has entered the portal and has four years of eligibility remaining. He did not play for the Bulldogs this year. Of course, he came to Starkville, MS because the late Mike Leach was there. Presumably with Leach's unfortunate passing the changes being made on the MSU offensive staff, Locke decided to move on.

(NEW)
>Sawyer Robertson should be visiting Baylor this weekend as well. Former 4-star 2021 QB from Lubbock Coronado who was at Mississippi State. He graduated ranking eighth all time in completions (813), 10th in touchdowns (135) and 13th in yards (11,302) in the state.

Robertson was competing for the starting job against Will Rogers earlier in the spring and fall. However, Rogers kept the job.

Baylor hopes Jackson's presence, physicality lifts WR group (STORY POSTED)

By Kevin Lonnquist
Publisher

Timing is everything. Maybe Ketron Jackson and Baylor have it locked down this time.

At the time when he was a 2021 prospect and going through the process, the then-Royse City and Rivals250 recruit strongly considered the Bears during the 2020 season.

And while he committed to Arkansas in early September, Baylor never stopped pushing. But when that season finished and head coach Dave Aranda made sweeping offensive coaching changes, Jackson stayed with the Razorbacks, signed and headed up to Fayetteville, AR.

But things change. After two seasons, Jackson went into the NCAA transfer portal and is coming to Baylor. He is scheduled be on campus around Jan. 14. Jackson chose Baylor over SMU and has two years of eligibility remaining.

“It was a new staff that I wasn’t too familiar with,’’ Jackson said about Baylor at the time of his recruitment. “I just wasn’t comfortable with everything just yet. Nothing against them. I just didn’t know them.’’

In his two seasons with the Razorbacks there was incremental progression through that offense directed by offensive coordinator Kendal Briles. As a true freshman in 2021, Jackson caught five passes for 97 yards and a touchdown.

In 2022, it got better with 16 receptions for 277 yards and three scores. He had a career-high four catches facing Alabama and career-high in yards with a 64-yard reception against Missouri State.

Jackson said he never considered entering the portal all season.

“It just came to me after the season,’’ he said. “No offense to Arkansas. Great fans. Great people. Great staff. I just wanted to be closer to home.’’

He said he kept his portal recruiting process private and that there were a select few schools that he would entertain. Jackson focused on Baylor and SMU. He visited both and went with the Bears.

The Bears 2022 wide receiver room lacked experience and consistent playmaking ability. It also didn’t have a physical pass catcher who could win the 50-50 balls. After averaging 17.3 yards per catch last fall, Baylor is hoping that happen.

“It was just a perfect fit for me,’’ Jackson said. “When I got to Baylor and talked with [wide receivers coach] Dallas Baker, I liked his approach. He had NFL experience and played at Florida

“They were pretty young at receiver last year and lost Tyquan [Thornton]. They missed that presence.’’

Of course, Baylor is still trying to solve its quarterback depth issues. But more options like the one Jackson offers can make the 2023 possibilities for the offense more attractive.

“I feel like my game is improving from running routes and speed,’’ Jackson said. “My hands have improved so I can make tough catches. When I come to Baylor, I’m just going to keep focusing on my route running, perfecting my craft and finding more ways to create separation.’’

On a personal note: I saw Jackson play against Aledo in the 2019 area playoffs at SMU’s Ford Stadium. While the Bearcats won handily, 52-24, Jackson caught all three touchdowns of six, 14 and 88 yards.

The 88-yard was nifty as he caught a screen, needed one block and then just ran away from everyone with track speed down the sideline. He has an opportunity to make an impact at Baylor if he works at it.

MBB - FINAL: No. 17 TCU 88, No. 19 Baylor 87; Bears 10-4, 0-2 (ANALYSIS/QUOTES/NOTES)

By SicEmSports
TCU made the plays when it counted in the final seconds to pull out a huge road win at the Ferrell Center.

Charles O'Bannon's jumper near the baseline with four seconds to play gave the Horned Frogs the lead. Then forward XavIer Cork blocked Keyonte George's driving attempted game-winning layup as time expired.

Following a timeout at half court with 3.6 seconds remaining, George inbounded it to Josh Ojianwuna between the circles. Ojiawuna tapped it back to George who drove the left lane and had a clear path to the basket. However, Cork recovered just in time to swat it away.

Baylor gave TCU its chance when Jalen Bridges missed a 3-pointer from the wing with 10 seconds to play with the Bears leading, 87-86. On TCU's possession, Mike Miles drove and dished off to O'Bannon who freed himself up and calmly drilled the 19-footer.

The Bears (10-4, 0-2) now have some work to do if they have hopes of trying to push toward a third straight Big 12 title. They were unable to hold a 17-point lead built in the second half.

Miles, the preseason Big 12 Player of the Year, finished with a career-high 33 including a big 3-point that cut Baylor's lead to 87-86. He was 12-21 from the field.

It was a tale of two halves. The Bears were fluid on offense and moving well. Baylor shot 61.5 percent for the opening 20 minutes and 9-of-13 from the arc.

However, the Horned Frogs made shots difficult in the second half and were tough to stop on the fast break. TCU outscored Baylor in that department, 23-2 and crushed Baylor in the paint, 52-24. The Bears shot 33 percent in the second half and were just 2-11 from long distance.

George, who was quiet for most of the second half, made a couple of big plays in the final minutes to help the Bears maintain the advantage. He finished with a career-high 27. LJ Cryer and Adam Flagler each had 11.

Now, the Bears have the oddity of playing host to former associate head coach Jerome Tang and Kansas State at 5:00 p.m. Saturday at the Ferrell Center.

  • Baylor is now 10-4 on the season, 0-2 in conference play. TCU is 13-1, 2-0 in the Big 12.
  • Baylor had its 13-game home winning streak snapped, the fourth-longest in program history.
  • The top eight Ferrell Center winning streaks have all come under Coach Scott Drew and five of the top eight have come in the last seven seasons.
  • The Bears are 80-5 in the last 85 home games.
  • Baylor leads the series with TCU, 105-86, including a 57-40 mark in games played in Waco.
  • BU is 8-2 vs. TCU in Waco since the Frogs joined the Big 12.
  • Coach Scott Drew is 16-5 vs. TCU.
  • Baylor is 24-8 against AP top-25 teams over the last four seasons.
  • Baylor is 42-10 in the Big 12 over the last three seasons, the best league record among power five conference teams.
  • Baylor is 156-91 in Big 12 play in the last 13+ seasons since 2010, after going 54-149 in the league's first 13 seasons
  • Drew is 427-237 in his 21st season as a head coach and a school-record 407-226 in his 20 years at Baylor. Since playing without scholarship limitations, Baylor is 373-157 (since 2007-08) under Drew.
  • The Bears are 105-10 when leading at halftime over the last six seasons and 74-7 over the last four years.
  • Baylor's 49 first-half points are the second-most in 2022-23 and the most since going for 61 vs. Mississippi Valley State in the season lid-lifter. It is the most for BU in a half vs. a league foe since scoring 50 in the second stanza vs. West Virginia in 2021.
  • The Bears started Adam Flagler, Keyonte George, LJ Cryer, Jalen Bridges and Flo Thamba for the team-leading 10th time on the year, going 7-3 with this starting lineup.
  • Adam Flagler had 13 points, six assists and two rebounds in 31 minutes without a turnover. It was his 13th-straight double-figure scoring effort, including each game of the year, and has scored in double figures in 51 career games, with the Bears going 42-9 in those contests.
  • Flagler has now scored in double figures in 13-straight games.
  • Keyonte George had a career-high 27 points on just six made baskets, going 4 of 7 from deep and 11 of 12 from the free-throw line, adding six rebounds and two assists in 27 minutes.
  • George notched a double-figure scoring effort for the 12th time this season. He had 16 first-half points, his season-best for points in a first half.
  • George reached 20+ points for the team-leading fifth time on the year.
  • LJ Cryer finished with 13 points and two assists. He scored in double figures for the eighth time on the year and the 23rd time in his career, with the Bears going 18-5 in those games.
  • Langston Love had 10 points in 15 minutes. He scored in double figures for the sixth time on the year, with BU owning a 5-1 record in those games.
  • Jalen Bridges made his 66th-consecutive start (14th at Baylor).
  • Josh Ojianwuna had a career-high tying 11 points with seven rebounds in 21 minutes, adding a block, assist and a steal. He scored in double figures for the second time on the year and the second time in the last three games.
  • Caleb Lohner played in his 76th-consecutive game (14th at Baylor).
  • The program's all-time winningest player, Flo Thamba made his 78th-straight start and played in his 130thcareer game, which ties him with Cory Jefferson for seventh most in program history.

Keyonte George

(Last shot) We got a good look, I had it going all night, I got a look at the rim, it was a left-handed layup. You got to finish. That’s all I was thinking, I’ve got to finish and move on to the next.

(Going back and forth with Miles) Me and Mike got close this year. We were able to go to the Damian Lillard camp and kind of connect there. We’ve always seen each other around Dallas, but that was the first time we really got to talk and kind of bond. I’ve always been watching him in high school and in college before me. It’s fun to go against a high level player like that.

(0-2 to start Big 12) Just play hard like Coach Drew said, getting back and make a point of who you’ve got. Just sit down in a stance and guard, that’s all we’ve got to do. We’re figuring out the offense and scoring. That’s not the issue. We’ve really got to get connected on the defensive side of the ball if we want to win. We’ve got it in us. We do it every day in practice. We show flashes, but we’ve got to put together a good 40 to win in this league.

(Defense in the first half) I felt like we were connected and in our stance and talking. Mike got them going and was getting downhill and we couldn’t stop them. We got a lead and blew it. We’ve got to go back and get better.

Scott Drew
(Where does the points at the rim need to come from) Right now, we’re playing more freshmen (minutes) than anyone else in the league. So, they’re going to get better the more they get used to the competition. Hopefully, Josh improves. Keyonte was very good tonight, but hopefully throughout the year, again, he gets better, and Langston hopefully he gets better. Jalen made some 3’s, but Jalen is more than capable of being a double-figure scorer. We’ve got to get him get some easies at the rim or driving a little more, getting to the free throw line. He’s a really good free throw shooter, but you can’t make free throws if you don’t get there.

(Trouble with defense in the paint) No question, we gave up 88 points. Take out the transition, and let’s just say that they get 12 (instead of 23 or 28), then you win by double figures and you’re feeling pretty good about the game. Until we get back and get matched up . . . and again, Mike Miles has elite speed and quickness. Again, NBA guys don’t come here and say guys are prospects if they’re not. So, they’re legit, and Coach Dixon has done a great job with them.

MBB - BREAKING: Rivals 2024 No. 11 Yves Missi Commits to Baylor

Done Deal, Missi is in the fold. Our national writer Rob Cassidy spoke with him about the decision to commit to Baylor over Texas and Stanford. Click the link for all the details.

All, the Rivals national basketball staff and I have put in our FutureCast predictions for the center out of Prolific Prep in NAPA, CA. An announcement is expected at any time. The Bears were contending against Texas, Indiana, Kansas and UCLA. If he does announce for Baylor, it would give the Bears ginormous 2024 class between Missi, No. 26 Robert Wright and No. 14 Jason Asemota. Ratings wise it would be the greatest in the history of Baylor.

BREAKING: Oregon Co-DC Matthew Powledge named DC (STORY POSTED)

By Kevin Lonnquist
Publisher

With a career that has head coach potential, Matthew Powledge is taking another step toward that.

After spending the 2022 season at Oregon’s Co-DC, the one-time Baylor safeties/special teams coach is returning to the Brazos as Baylor’s defensive coordinator.

When Baylor made the move in late November to remove Ron Roberts as defensive coordinator, Powledge was on the immediate short list of candidates to replace him.

Former Wisconsin DC and interim head coach Jim Leonhard was also under consideration. The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman was first with the news.

Oregon’s rushing attack was primarily effective in the wide-open PAC 12. It allowed just 125 yards per game. It also was plus-9 in the turnover ratio with 16 interceptions.

With Baylor in 2020 and 2021, Powledge featured a very sound special teams unit but had his safeties among the most respected in all of college football. The 2021 Baylor defense collected 19 interceptions including six from JT Woods, two from Jalen Pitre and three from Jairon McVea. The Bears were plus-12 in the turnover ratio.

The development of Pitre and Woods helped them emerge as high NFL draft picks. Pitre went in the second round to Houston. Wood was selected in the third round by the Los Angeles Chargers.

Baylor’s defense slumped badly toward the end of the 2022 season. It lost it last four games and allowed at least 29 in the last five.

North Texas TE Jake Roberts and Baylor

By Kevin Lonnquist
Publisher

The veteran from UNT entered the portal before Christmas. Roberts said he will be visiting Baylor Saturday and Sunday. SMU and Arkansas are involved. He has two years of eligibility remaining.

Roberts, a native of Norman, OK, a pretty solid 2022 for the Mean Green (28-394 3 TD, 14.1 ypc). Obviously, Ben Sims is gone. Drake Dabney is coming back from a season ending broken leg. Kelsey Johnson has upside. But the Bears need a bridge to the younger guys in the program and who is coming.

Roberts also visiting Arkansas and SMU this week. Arkansas is Wednesday and Thursday. SMU is Thursday evening and Friday followed by Baylor.

"They see me as a do-it-all type of guy,'' Roberts said. "Receiver and effective blocking in the run game.''

A crowded room doesn't bother Roberts. Baylor signed two TEs from the 2023 class in Hawkins Polley and Matthew Klopfenstein.

"I think the TE is a big part of the offense at Baylor and multiple guys will be on the field,'' he said. "I think I would fit in the room well.''

WBB: No. 23 Baylor 81, No. 17 Oklahoma 70; 11-3, 2-0

  • In their first true road game of the season, the No. 23 Baylor Bears picked up the 81-70 victory over the No. 17 Oklahoma Sooners at the Lloyd Noble Center.
  • Baylor moved to 34-27 all-time in the series with Oklahoma and 16-12 on the road.
  • The win marked BU’s second top-25 victory of the season.
  • The Bears held the Sooners to 18 points below their season average (88.42).
  • Baylor used a 16-1 run behind eight points from Bella Fontleroy to jump to a 21-5 lead in the opening frame, holding the Sooners to just 6.3% (1-for-16) shooting from the floor. The five points by OU were the fewest in a quarter by the Sooners in at least the last five seasons.
  • Junior Sarah Andrews poured in a career-high 30 points, marking the sixth 20-plus point performance of her career.
  • For the second-straight game, and 11th time this season, Jaden Owens led the Bears in assists, finishing with six.
  • Owens recorded a career-high six steals – the most in a game by a Bear since Dijonai Carrington tallied just as many in a win over McNeese on Dec. 19, 2020.
  • Fifth-year Caitlin Bickle notched her second double-double of the season, and second of her career, finishing with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Baylor names Christian Robinson ILB Coach

This comes to be as Ron Roberts coached LBs. So Robinson takes this position. Powledge will handle the safeties as DC (very common for coordinators to handle a position group) since Ronnie Wheat coached the safeties. Not sure how ST will go but would think Powledge will have a role but not full time.

RELEASE

WACO, Texas -- One of the top young defensive minds in college football, Christian Robinson has been tabbed to coach Baylor's inside linebackers, as announced by head coach Dave Aranda on Friday morning.

Robinson joins the Baylor staff after coaching linebackers at Auburn during the 2022 season, following four seasons in the same position at Florida. He also served as a graduate assistant at Mississippi State (2017), Ole Miss (2015-16) and Georgia (2013-14). Robinson played linebacker at Georgia from 2009-12.

"We are excited to welcome Christian and his wife Kaley into the Baylor Family," Aranda said. "Christian is one of the top young coaches in the country, who's commitment to relationships, and the success of the young men he coaches, on and off the field, is an ideal fit for our program."

A native of Norcross, Ga., Robinson was named to the American Football Coaches Association 35 Under 35 listing in 2022, highlighting some of the nation's best up-and-coming coaches under 35.

"It is an honor to join Coach Aranda's staff and represent Baylor University," Robinson said. "We look forward to supporting, encouraging and promoting excellence in everything we do. Life is about relationships and we are excited to foster those in our new home of Waco Texas. Sic 'Em!"

In 2022, while coaching linebackers and serving as the defensive run-game coordinator with Auburn, Robinson helped Owen Pappoe to a team-leading 91 tackles, including three for a loss with two sacks and two forced fumbles. Cam Riley ranked second on the team with 65 tackles, adding 3.5 for a loss.

Robinson coached linebackers in 2021 for the Gators, helping lead Florida to a fourth-consecutive bowl berth. During his four years at Florida, the Gators ranked fourth nationally in sacks, trailing only Alabama, Clemson and Pittsburgh. The Gators also forced 78 turnovers during Robinson's four-year tenure, 26th-best in the nation.

In 2021, the Gators totaled 37 sacks, ranking 30th in the nation, and out-sacked its opponents by +23 over the course of the year. The Gators improved defensively in points per game, first-downs allowed, third-down and fourth-down percentage, rushing, passing and total yards allowed.

What was he Thinking? (LONNQUIST THOUGHTS)

By Kevin Lonnquist
Publisher

Welcome to the start of another year, 2023 to be precise. We hope that whatever you did on New Year’s Even was done in accordance with good judgment and minimal risk of danger.

As the RJB’s mother Maureen used to say, “New Year’s is for amateurs.’’ You could start off a new year with the traditional “Auld Lang Syne”. But the RJB won’t do that.

Besides, there was a great debate at the end of the 1989 movie “When Harry met Sally” about that song.

Harry: What does this song mean? My whole life, I don't know what this song means. I mean, 'Should old acquaintance be forgot'? Does that mean that we should forget old acquaintances, or does it mean if we happened to forget them, we should remember them, which is not possible because we already forgot?
Sally: Well, maybe it just means that we should remember that we forgot them or something. Anyway, it's about old friends.

So the RJB will bring you back to the two top crooners of the 1940s and 1950s in Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby who rang in the new year their way.

It’s time for some brutal honesty about the Baylor 2023 QB situation. It’s not very good right now.

Hopefully, all of us acknowledge this. And if you don’t, then you probably have not wanted to acknowledge the frustration of this or really don’t know. But if you’re paying $10 per month for continuous Baylor information, then you should know.

Based on the way things have been going since Dave Aranda’s program officially entered the portal market on Dec. 21 – the day Austin Novosad signed with Oregon – this has been a game of playing catchup.

I’m not trying to be the sour apple or the rain on a parade. But given what you have read since national signing day from the stories I’ve posted to my posts in threads to the movement of other big-name portal QBs and from whatever else you’ve read, I’ve been trying to prepare you for the market Baylor finds itself in and the reality.

For starters, Baylor was late to it. The portal opened on Dec. 5. Again, not its fault. At the time, Novosad appeared to be solid. But as Dec. 21 crept closer, coaching changes transpired and Novosad became cozier with Oregon, Baylor football found itself in a QB situation like playing musical chairs. When the music stopped, there wasn’t a chair available.

I mean available for finding impactful signal callers who would be considered contenders for the 2023 starting job.

It should bother you a lot that there is one scholarship QB (Blake Shapen) on this roster. Within the last six months, three QBs left, Gerry Bohanon (South Florida), highly touted walk on CJ Rogers (put on scholarship at Texas State) and Kyron Drones (Virginia Tech).

With the exception of grad transfers Brennan Armstrong from Virginia and Spencer Sanders from Oklahoma State, there isn’t a QB in the portal that you can say would arrive in Waco and contend to be the starter Labor Day weekend.

For beginners, I don’t believe Armstrong and Sanders would come to Baylor unless they were told they would be the starter – not compete with Shapen but start – and then had a great NIL deal to compliment that. They have long histories of starting at their old place. They would not start over.

What’s out there are the likes of Oregon’s Jay Butterfield and Purdue’s Brady Allen. Quarterbacks who had tremendous high school careers, arrived at their colleges with high expectations but for whatever reason could not crack the lineup and drifted.

With the portal deadline closing Jan. 18, there’s always the possibility of a name surfacing and Baylor making a move. However, there is the likelihood this program is going to add a QB or two for depth.

That would be too bad because that position needs competition in the worst way.

I heard it too many times over the last year that when you saw Shapen go through a practice, he was nails. Throws were crisp. Timing with receivers and running backs on target. He looked comfortable. Heck, Aranda said it to the media at practices and the receivers backed that up.

When it translated to a game and it was on the line, something didn’t follow. Maybe it was confidence. Maybe it was the yips. Maybe he struggled reading defenses. Whatever it was, you don’t commit 12 turnovers in the last eight regular season games because of just having a bad day here and there.

A trend developed. How far it’s come since completing a Big 12 championship game and AT&T Stadium record 17 passes to start a game.

Really, the best thing to happen to Shapen in the spring of 2022 was Bohanon. They fought for the starting job and Shapen rose to the occasion because he had to be pushed. When Bohanon left, Shapen didn’t have to look over his shoulder. Perhaps he needed that uncomfortable feeling.

Everyone knew Drones wasn’t going to be a threat. What everyone needed to know about Drones was if he could be credible if Shapen became injured. We kind of got that answer against West Virginia.

I do believe that Shapen will take great care this offseason reviewing everything that occurred in 2022 and work as hard as possible to learn from mistakes and be better for it. He could be better this coming fall and all the criticism would be silenced.

However, if you’re the Baylor coaching staff, you can think that and believe that. But you better not put your chips in the middle of the table publicly saying that. You need to show your fan base as well as your bosses – AD Mack Rhoades – that you know you have a problem with this room, and you will make it the best you can possibly make it.

Now, all Aranda, Jeff Grimes and Shawn Bell must do is find someone who will actually make this better both from an optics standpoint and a competition standpoint.

Time isn’t on their side.

Let’s make it a great week!
