West Virginia QB Will Grier is having a breakout season (not this Will Grier)

West Virginia (4-2, 2-1) is coming off their best win of the season, upending Texas Tech 46-35, and has moved into the AP Top 25 at #23. This is their third trip into the top 25 this season. The last two times they were in, they lost the next game.

Junior quarterback Will Grier (6’2”, 204) transferred from Florida, and has thrown for over 2000 yards in six games. His 21 passing TDs leads the nation. He’s added two rushing touchdowns.

Senior Justin Crawford (6’0”, 202) is the lead running back with 609 yards, seven TDs, and a 6.5 average. Sophomore Kennedy McKoy (6’0”, 201) has added 45 rushes for 256 yards.

Three receivers have over thirty catches. Junior Gary Jennings (6’1”, 204) has 48 catches for 586 yards, while Junior David Sills (6’3”, 201), who originally signed with West Virginia as a QB, left when they moved him to wide receiver, then came back this year has 39 receptions for 601 yards and 12 TDs. If Baylor is studying game film, they’ll notice that Texas Tech sold out to stop the run, and ended up getting torched for 352 yards.

Senior linebacker Al-Rasheed Benton leads the defense with 52 tackles and one interception. The defense has nine takeaways: six interceptions and three fumble recoveries. Benton has been playing since he was a freshman, and got the starting nod as a junior.

The Mountaineers coaching staff has also gotten pretty good at adjusting, if last week is any indication. Raiders QB Nic Shimonek had 252 yards passing and four TDs in the first half, but only 71 yards and no TDs in the second half, with an interception. On offense, after holding Grier to one TD in the first half, he made four TD throws in the second.

On special teams, the Mountaineers don't have any returns for TDs. Placekicker Senior Mike Molina (5'7", 179) is a perfect 35 of 35 on extra points, but only 57.1% on field goals, although two of his three misses are from over 40 yards.
