A leader. A warrior. A competitor. That's what Terrel Bernard brought every time he stepped on the field for Baylor.
While shoulder, wrist and knee injuries impacted his tenure, his physicality and other attributes kept him on NFL franchises radars.
Baylor's historic night in the second round of the NFL draft continued when Buffalo used its third round pick on the Sugar Bowl MVP. He was the fourth Bear to come off the board joining second round picks Jalen Pitre (Houston), Tyquan Thornton (New England) and fellow third round choice JT Woods (LA Chargers).
This program has not had four players selected in the first three rounds of the draft since 1959.
Bernard was an first-team All-Big 12 performer by the conference and the AP. He finished with 106 tackles (61 solo), 12.5 TFL, 7.5 sacks and five QB hurries. His 20 tackles in the Sugar Bowl tied a bowl record.
He did all this overcoming a meniscus tear in his knee which caused him to miss the Oklahoma State game.
Projections had Bernard going on the third day of the draft. Most thought it would be in the fifth round.
However, it means a good pay day for him. With NFL rookie wage scale in place since 2011, Spotrac projects Bernard to receive contract worth $5.1 million with a signing bonus of a little more than $900 from the Bills.
