SicEmSports continues its look at Baylor’s 2022 opponents. Game 8 is in Lubbock at Texas Tech. Obviously, there are many emotions here with former Baylor Associate Head Coach Joey McGuire now running the Red Raiders.

But McGuire gets his first chance to be a Division I college football coach. This game has been decided by two Tech field goals the last two years. Tech kicked a chip shot to win, 24-23, in 2020 in Lubbock. The Red Raiders then missed a field goal as time expired in 2021 in Waco. The Bears avoided overtime and escaped, 27-24. In fact, the last three meeting between these two have been decided by a total of seven points.

Texas Tech is predicted 9th in the Big 12 preseason poll.

Opponent: Texas Tech
Head Coach: Joey McGuire (1st season)
2021 Record: 7-6, 3-6 (Texas Tech defeated Mississippi State in Liberty Bowl, 34-7)
Conference Affiliation: Big 12
Record vs. Baylor: Baylor leads, 40-39-1
Returning Starters: 5 offense, 5 defense
Offensive Formation: One-back/Air Raid
Defensive Formation: 3-3-5, 3-4
Key Returners: QB Tyler Shough, WR Myles Price, RB SaRodorick Thompson, RB Tajh Brooks, DL Tyree Wilson, S Dadrion Taylor-Demerson, LB/S Reggie Pearson

This is Texas Tech football in a nutshell over the last decade. In 2021, the Red Raiders averaged 30.3 points per game. They also yielded 30.2 points per game. And now you know why Matt Wells was fired in the middle of last season and this program sought a different voice and energy.

McGuire’s affable personality is a big change. It’s helped Tech’s recruiting reach respectable levels. But that’s not going to do very much for this year where the same problems from previous seasons persist.

The Red Raiders will move the football with Oregon transfer Shough at QB. Thompson and Brooks are a solid 1-2 running combination. This Air-Raid offense will always develop receivers.

What has to happen is for the defense to be just a little credible.

Vanderbilt LB transfer Dimitri Moore could help in the middle of the field. The Cedar Hill product comes back to Texas and plays for his old coach. This defense has had all sorts of issues defending the pass. Something drastic must change.

Texas Tech likely won’t challenge for the Big 12 championship this fall. But there’s enough talent that it might jump up and pick off a contending team and become a bowl team. Baylor, Texas and Oklahoma all visit AT&T Jones Stadium.
