SicEmSports continues its look at Baylor’s 2022 opponents. Game 7 is Homecoming on Oct. 22 when the Bears play host to Kansas. The Bears will have nine days between games following their Thursday, Oct. 13 game at West Virginia.
Kansas has won only 23 total games since 2010. The Jayhawks have not finished eighth or better since the days when Nebraska, Colorado and Texas A&M were still in the Big 12. They are predicted last in the Big 12 preseason media poll.
Opponent: Kansas
Head Coach: Lance Leipold (2-10 2nd season; 148-49 16th overall)
2021 Record: 2-10, 1-8
Conference Affiliation: Big 12
Record vs. Baylor: Baylor leads, 17-4
Returning Starters: 9 offense, 7 defense
Offensive Formation: One-back
Defensive Formation: 4-3
Key Returners: QB Jalon Daniels, WR Luke Grimm, RB Devin Neal, LB Rich Miller, LB Gavin Potter, DL Kenean Caldwell
Rebuild No. whatever that number is within the last decade-plus is under way. And while the Jayhawks aren’t expected to good enough to chase a bowl bid, there is at least the hope that they can play spoiler and find a way to finally escape the cellar of the conference standings. They also want to stop being the designated homecoming team for Big 12 opponents.
Given the turbulence between West Virginia and Texas Tech – the teams picked ahead of them – KU may have that chance. The only problem for those games is that Kansas has to travel to Morgantown, WV and Lubbock. But the Jayhawks did win at Texas in OT last year. So there’s that.
Besides talent, one of the biggest problems for Kansas has been trying to find a credible QB. That position has acted more like a turnstile on a yearly basis. However, Daniels finished the 2021 season as the starter and appears to be headed toward being the No. 1 guy for this team. The running game has a chance to be pretty decent led by Neal and Minnesota transfer Ky Thomas.
Kansas also added some defensive players through the portal including UCF LB Eriq Gilyard and Ohio State Craig Young. The defense needs all the help it can get after surrendering 42 points per game.
Credibility and respectability are the charge words for the Jayhawks in 2022.
