Baylor OT Spencer Drango finalist for Campbell Trophy

IRVING, Texas – Baylor senior Spencer Drango was chosen as one of 12 finalists for the 2015 William V. Campbell Trophy, The National Football Foundation (NFF) & College Hall of Fame announced Thursday.

The trophy, presented by Fidelity Investments, annually recognizes an individual as the absolute best football scholar-athlete in the nation.

Drango will receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship as a member of the NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class. The finalists will travel to New York City for the 58th NFF Annual Awards Dinner on Dec. 8. At the event, one member of the class will be declared the winner of the 26th William V. Campbell Trophy and have his postgraduate scholarship increased to $25,000.

In the classroom, the Cedar Park, Texas, product has been a three-time Academic All-Big 12 honoree, while earning 2013 first-team CoSIDA Academic All-District honors. He is a two-time Baylor Dean’s List honoree and an eight-time Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll selection. Drango graduated in December 2014 with a degree in Finance and is currently working on his Master’s.

In the community, Drango has traveled to Brazil for a mission trip with Baylor student-athletes in May 2015. He is the president of BU’s chapter of Uplifting Athletes, which is an organization that raises research dollars for rare diseases. Drango has also led monthly Fellowship of Christian Athletes gatherings at a local middle school over the last two years and has participated in Baylor’s ‘Feed My Starving Children’ initiative in 2012, 2014 and 2015.

On the field for the undefeated Bears, Drango is a returning All-American and a two-time All-Big 12 first team honoree. In 2015, Drango has started all seven games at left tackle for No. 2-ranked Baylor. He has aided the Bears in again being the nation’s top offense (686.1 ypg and 61.1 ppg), while ranking second in rushing offense with 338.3 yards per game on the ground.

He was named the 2014 Big 12 Co-Offensive Lineman of the Year, after starting all 13 games for the Big 12 champion Bears.

Drango is already on the Outland Trophy and Rotary Lombardi watch lists as well. To round out his impressive resume he has been named a Wuerffel Trophy nominee and a candidate for the Senior CLASS Award.

Previously, three Bears have been selected as National Football Foundation Scholar-Athletes, including Don Trull (1963), Joe Pawelek (2010) and Nick Florence (2012).

Selected from a nationwide pool of 135 exceptional semifinalists, the 12 finalists are made up of five offensive linemen, two quarterbacks, two linebackers, a defensive back, a defensive end and one safety. Drango and Oklahoma’s Ty Darlington are the only Big 12 players that are recognized.
