As good as Baylor has been in the red zone this year, it was that zone that really frustrated the Bears Saturday afternoon at Iowa State.
The Bears had no problem moving the ball down the field against an Iowa State defense, which leads the Big 12. But the drives continuously stalled.
After coming up short to the Cyclones 28-14, Baylor (5-5, 3-4) now has just two chances left to become bowl eligible in games at home against TCU and at AT&T Stadium in Arlington Texas Tech.
Defensively Baylor wasn’t able to force a Cyclone punt until the opening possession of the second half. Iowa State (6-3, 5-2) was 6-of-6 on third down in the first half.
The game got chippy in the third quarter and Baylor’s Greg Roberts and Iowa State’s David Montgomery were ejected for throwing punches.
Both players will miss the first half of next weeks games.
Baylor had two scoring opportunities in the first half, but the inconsistency of kicker Connor Martin was on display has he missed two field goal attempts.
Down 20-0, Baylor put together a 15-play scoring drive featuring two fourth down conversions.
Brewer dropped back from the 6-yard line and lofted the ball to Denzel Mims in the right corner of the end zone. Mims was able to jump and grab the ball for touchdown.
Baylor found the end zone once more early in the fourth quarter, as Brewer connected with Pooh Stricklin on a 7-yard pass. Iowa State still held a 28-14 lead however.
Facing fourth-and-four with 6:59 remaining, Brewer hit Stricklin in stride for a fresh set of downs, it was the third successful fourth down conversion of the game for the Bears.
Brewer would be ejected from the game two plays later for a personal foul. He finished the game 26-of-36 passing for 288 yards and two touchdowns, while having a career high 72 yards rushing on 12 carries.
Jalen McClendon entered the game and completed one pass before throwing four straight incompletions and Baylor turned the ball over at the Cyclone 12-yard line.
Baylor had one last offensive possession, that appeared to end with a McClendon interception in the end zone. The Cyclones were flagged for a defensive hands to the face and Baylor got the ball with a fresh set of downs.
The Bears faced 4th and 10 and McClendon overthrew Mims to seal the victory for Iowa State.
McClendon finished the game 3-12 for 71-yards.
Baylor will host rival TCU next Saturday with the kickoff time TBD.
