Baylor’s push to win the Big 12 regular season championship is sitting right there for it. On Saturday, the Bears play host to Iowa State with a chance to lock up their second consecutive title.
They can either share it or win it outright.
It all kind of depends on what Kansas does Thursday night against the TCU. The Horned Frogs 74-64 victory Tuesday in Fort Worth gave the Bears a half-game lead.
The Jayhawks and Horned Frogs meet again in the Allen Fieldhouse. Should Kansas win, the Jayhawks will be tied with the Bears for first. Each would have 13-4 records. Kansas plays host to Texas Saturday at 3:00 p.m. Baylor plays host to Iowa State at 5:00 p.m. If the Bears and Jayhawks finish sharing the Big 12 title, Baylor would be the No. 2 seed in the Big 12 tournament because it was swept by No. 3 seed Texas Tech (Red Raiders have already clinched that). Kansas split with the Red Raiders.
But this finish for the Bears is also about seeding. Two weeks ago, the NCAA tournament selection committee named the Bears the No. 5 overall seed in the country. That makes them a No. 2 seed. However, much has changed since then. Now, the Bears are trying to secure a No. 1 seed.
It’s a pretty good bet that when the tournament field is announced March 13, Baylor should be playing the first and second rounds March 17-19 at Dickie’s arena in Fort Worth. A late slip either Saturday or in the Big 12 tournament should not have much bearing on where Baylor is placed.
Let’s take a look at where several bracketologists have the Bears slotted before the regular season finale.
