When you look at the wide receivers this year, you go hmmmm….
There are a lot of bodies, but sorting through them might be a challenge.
Denzel Mims and Chris Platt have moved on. Mims was the big gun, Platt was never the same after his knee injury, but did make some contributions.
Baylor still hasn’t defined what their offense will be next year, so there could be four wide receivers, or three wides and a tight end. Even though there are fifteen receivers on the roster, seven of them have little chance to see the field. That takes us to eight.

Jared Atkinson
#16, Senior, 6’3”, 216 lbs

Coming out of Horn High School in Mesquite, Atkinson interrupted his junior year to be with his mom while she was fighting cancer. He returned in 2019, but did not make much of an impact, only recording seven receptions for 77 yards. During his sophomore year, he showed some flashes, and there’s a possibility he could be a contributor.

R. J. Sneed
#13, Junior, 6’1”, 200 lbs

Sneed ended up starting as a freshman in 2017. Unfortunately, it was cut short by an injury. He redshirted in 2018, and was a good outlet receiver in 2019. He could be a contributor in the mid-range passing game.

Gavin Holmes
#18, Sophomore, 5’11”, 193 lbs

Holmes was an all state receiver from Justin, TX, and might be a good receiver, if he can get healthy. He played in nine games as a true freshman in 2017, and caught thirteen passes for 166 yards. He’s lost the last two years with injuries.

Josh Fleeks
#21, Junior, 5’11”, 188 lbs

A three star out of Cedar Hill, Fleeks appeared in every game last year. He pulled down 25 receptions for 262 yards. He has not used a red shirt.

Tyquan Thornton
#81, Junior, 6’3, 176 lbs

Thornton’s been in every game since he came to Baylor, and is the one returning star on the team. He’s tall and lanky. More of a home run hitter than a possession receiver. Thornton needs a great year for the passing attack to go.

Jackson Gleeson
#80, Sophomore, 6’0”, 185 lbs

Gleeson redshirted his freshman year and played special teams in 2019. There have been expectations of Gleeson, but he hasn’t seen the field much, yet.

Yusuf Terry
#19, Redshirt Freshman, 6’3”, 189 lbs

Terry is out of Imhotep Charter in Philadelphia. He was in two games early in the season, but didn’t make any catches.

Adonis McCarty
Freshman, 5’11”, 180 lbs

Incoming freshman, two star out of Brownwood, TX. His only other offer was from Tulsa.

Seth Jones
Freshman, 5’11”, 184 lbs

Two star out of Shadow Creek, Houston. Other offers were from TCU, Houston, Boston College, and Houston Baptist.

The others

Blake Perdue
#34, Sophomore, 6’0”, 189 lbs

Graduated HS and played baseball for two years at Midland College.
Listed as both a sophomore on the player bio, but also says 2019 was his junior year. Whatever. You won’t see him on the field.

Kyle Peterson
#82, Junior, 6’0”, 183 lbs

Played two years at Moorpark, California College before transferring to Baylor. Listed as being in the junior class, but lists him as being a junior in 2019. Same deal as Perdue.

Davis Baucum
#23, Sophomore, 5’10”, 189 lbs

Transferred from Jacksonville (FLA) University. Played in the warm up games with SFA and UTSA last year.

Tripp Mitchell
#15, Redshirt Freshman, 6’1”, 190 lbs

Out of Oaks Christian HS in California. His mom is softball coach at Moorpark College, where Kyle Peterson spent two years before coming to Baylor.

Kolby White
#40, Redshirt Freshman, 5’8”, 170 lbs

Appeared in the same two games as Baucum. Out of Ft. Bend-Elkins HS.

Remember how Baylor ended up with a bunch of wide receiver injuries and was running the walk on placekicker at the position in spring ball? It looks like a lot of these guys were scooped up for practice purposes. Perdue, Peterson, Baucum, Mitchell and White all showed up in Spring 2019, and probably won’t see the field except in blowout games.

Tyquan Thornton’s going to have to step up to be the alpha receiver. Sneed and Fleeks have shown they can be good possession receivers. Jared Atkinson will make a few catches, but he’s not an impact player. After that, there are a lot of questions.

Can Gavin Holmes come back after two years off? Jackson Gleeson and Yusuf Terry have both completed their second seasons, but haven’t seen the field much. Baylor needs one or both of them to step up this year.

If Adonis McCarty or Seth Jones sees the field this year, either they were woefully underrated coming out of high school or the Bears have a problem at wide receiver.

The Bears only have four receivers on their roster that we’ve seen enough out of to know what we’ve got. That’s Thornton, Sneed, Fleeks and Atkinson.

The rest are question marks.
